Virtual companies / Cross data sharing alternative in Dynamics 365 EE

Let's assume the following scenario: We have 2 million items and 20 legal entities. All items data should be shared. Items setup is the same in all LEs. When configuration is changed it is changed in all companies. Is it currently possible to share InventTable and other related tables between companies without duplicating the records? If we release all 2mln items to all LEs we have 40mln records at start, not to mention the configuration management overhead. We need to have all items released upfront. What is the 365 solution for such use case?

My guess is sharing of the inventory tables is not possible given the fragmented highly normalized nature of the AX file system. Shared tables are intended for static data type items.

A better solution would be to examine using sites to emulate a company. Reporting can patch over a lot of the problem.

This does have a downside in that the customer base is similarly shared.

Maybe Dynamics 365 has a better way of doing this?

Dynamics 365 EE removes the virtual companies functionality but offers no alternative. Cross data sharing is a replication mechanism which is reserved for group and reference data only. Currently the docs suggest that the total number of managed records should not exceed 1 million (number of records times number of legal entities)

I agree that the data structure is complex but at least in AX 2012 you could try to develop such solution and limit the number of records in DB.

In 365 EE the "saved data per company" property on standard tables cannot be changed.

Changing the design to use a single legal entity is a solution here but it also creates other issues which I will not discuss here.

    Hi Sebastian,

There is no other solution than having the data copied in multiple legal entities. I'm not a fan of merging multiple legal entities into one.

The master data tables are indeed not supported for the cross data sharing. Can you also tell why you have 2 million items? Are they all used or do you have complete vendor catalogs in your environment without knowing if those items will be used or not?

i have the same problem but one little bit more complex scenario about 5000 items and 140 legal entities and no answer from MS about what its best solution.

    Dear all,

we also have a similar scenario. There are 40.000 released items which are all equal for all legal entities. We thought to use cross company data sharing. There was the idea to split the master data from the released product into different sections mentioned in Supply chain data sharing templates. But we choose a solution to export the released items from the "main" legal entity and import to all other legal entities.

Will there be any further concepts for cross company data sharing?

    Thx
