Transparent 3D models

Hi,

Can anyone offer advice on how to import / create 3D models with transparencies for use within Dynamic 365 Guides? New field of study for my team with models being created in ZBrush with a BPR Transparent shading selected. Do I need to export to another programme to create the file with the rendered transparent model or can all be done straight from ZBrush. Thank you

    Hi Blended,

Here is the documentation you seek: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/mixed-reality/guides/3d-content-guidelines/

Guides requires the use of gITF format so yes you will have to convert them into gITF format.

As Ken mentioned, you have to convert your models into gITF (.glb) format.  However, I personally haven't had much success in achieving transparency with holograms in the HoloLens app.  One example is the automotive headlamp assembly with its clear polycarbonate lens.  Even though the lens may look OK in the Guides previewer (transparent lens), it comes out opaque when placing the hologram in the HL2 world.

My workaround has been to separate the transparent part (lens) from the main mesh (headlamp assembly), and place both parts in the real world as individual holograms.  I then apply the X-ray style to the opaque part (lens) to make it transparent.

The result isn't optimal (the lens ends up with a disagreeable bluish glow), but at least the user can see through it.

After my failed attempts, I stumbled upon the note below in the Dynamics 365 guides documentation (wish I had read this sooner):

Thank you Ken and Nelway for posting documentation and a workaround. Blended Learning: I'll make a note of this posting to our technical team as all feedback is helpful in prioritizing work. In the meantime please try Nelway's workaround and let me know whether it works for you.
