SSRS report how to open the original report in Visual studio

ReportReport

Hi Friends,

We have customized tax 1099 report, if you edit it, it opens our report in VS. Now we need to make change due to IRS new 1099 form. Microsoft sent out hotfix.

The question is how can I see the updated original report? and find the difference in VS.

I can see SSRS report difference in AOT by comparing CUS/SYP layer, but that's not helping to modifying report. Someone suggest to compare XPO, I looked it, there are tremendous changes, worst part is you can't tell which is supposed to move to customized one.

First time doing this. any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi River,

You can take a backup of the customized report (into an xpo) and delete the SSRS report logging into CUS layer in your Dev system. This way you can delete all the customizations and will have only the updated report design (from the MS hotfix). You can open the VS project from AOT and view the report design.

If you want to compare both the reports, it might be  easier to open up the report in two different Dev environments (using VS) and compare the changes done. On one of the Dev environments, you can remove the customizations, as I mentioned before. The other Dev environment should have the customized report.

    Hi Gunjan,

Thanks a lot for your help, and that's what I did.  In the beginning, I was wondering why people before me modify the 1099 report, now I realized that it's just some space adjustment, plus, when they made change, left a few copy of design forms in report, bad practice by the way, when I comparing XPO, it has tremendous change, and it confused me.

I guess my best option is just remove the old report in CUS by using one in SYP, let user test, then adjust space if needed.

    Hi River,

Yes. That might be a good approach, especially if there are a lot of copy designs left behind. You can evaluate the latest report (from MS update) based on user input and can make the changes as needed.
