A question about the connection between the BOM/Formula and the route

Hi,

Now, I'm working with our client, the chemical company people with Dynamics AX 2012. Our client's requirement is as follows.

- The chemical company have multiple production line. And they manufacture the same product by multiple production line.
- When they manufacture the same product, the BOM/Formula differ by each production line.
- So, when they input the product and the production line in AX, they hope to be decided the BOM/Formula by automatically.

My question is as follows.
- We create the routes in AX 2012 by each production line. And We create various BOMs/Formulas.
- But there is no relationship between the route and the BOM/Forula.
- we would like to connect the route with the BOM/Formula in Master Plan, Creation of Planned orders, Creation of Batch Orders.

I think that this is the standard requirement of the chemical industry.
Do you have any good idea, or suggestions ?

Regards

Atsushi

    Atsushi--

It seems to me that our questions are very similar, and really amount to this:

--If a product can be built using more than one BOM/build plan, what facilities does AX have for choosing which, or what intervention points are available for specifying that logic? You seem to want to control BOM by location, I have different production lines/machines that use different BOMs

--the same question happens at shipping/fulfillment time: if an order can be satisfied using either of several different available items, what facilities does AX have for choosing which, or what intervention points are available for specifying that logic?

The only answer I've come across so far is the suggestion to create an additional product, which then becomes a substitute item for the one that was ordered. So in your case, each location would have a unique product with its BOM, and the original product would never actually be made at all.

I'm hoping for a better answer, but that's the only response I've had so far, and that wasn't on this forum.

It simply does not work that way, you create production and it picks the BOM and route and schedules in this manner. What you are asking it to do is select the production line, and then have it calculate the BOM. What physical difference is there in the BOM depending upon the production line?

"It simply does not work that way"

I assume by "It" you mean AX.

Two facilities or production lines built several years apart could certainly build the same product using different processes that consume different raw materials (perhaps due to manufacturing technology changes in the intervening years). Or the actual design specifications may change, just not in ways that matter to sales, shipping, or the customer.

In Atsushi's case. it sounds like the build process and BOM depends entirely on which facility gets the requirement.

It's not necessarily a different product from the sales point of view.

Hi Atsushi, I think that you're going to need customisations to achieve what you want. The last time we were faced with a similar problem we added the Route number to BOM version table, and then when the produciton order was created manually, we checked that the appropriate Route had been used on the production order relative to the BOM used on the production order. But we never addressed the master planning issue, which is basically you want to decide which resource to use; and then that resource determines the BOM.

It does seem to be a fundamental weakness that in AX there is no way to create a BOM/Route pairing.

Yes bobD the IT is AX in the context, and AX does not work that way out of the box. Yes I can see in some industries aged processes, but in the Chemical industry the same does not apply in my experience (but have not worked in every nuance of each area), where the content of the product changes it becomes a new product. I would like Atsushi to tell us the impact on the setup they are encountering. I have also encountered the issue in the past where the production facility drove the BOM but again like Tim this was not an impact on planning due to the process. Just want to understand the reason behind the requirement before saying they have to customise the system.

    Hi All,

Thank you for your replies. Our client's requirements are as follows.

    - They set up multiple routes and multiple BOMs/Formulas in AX2012.

    - They have multiple resource to produce a same product. And they set up the routes by resource.

    - They would like to change the BOM/Formila by the route.

We need customization so that Tim may say ?

Is it difficult to customize in Master Plan ?

    Please advise us.

    Regards

Can you tell us "why" the BOM physically changes on the selection of the route?

Yes changing Master Planning will be difficult, for example what are the rules they define for route selection at planning or do they not?

"I would like Atsushi to tell us "

Seems the best way forward for him, and I don't want to hijack his thread--I entered it, as stated, only because his question and mine seemed related, and both had already sunk down to the third page w/o reply.

But while our problems are similar, our situations differ rather fundamentally--he's (most likely) in the realm of process manufacturing, and I'm dealing with discrete (in fact bespoke) manufacturing--just at assembly line volumes.

So if Atsushi is now in a position to get some pointed assistance, can I ask you to take a look at my question ("architecture question: separating product what vs. manufacturing how")?. If not to perhaps to answer it, at least to point me in the right direction for how to ask it?

    thanks,

    bobD

Actually , this is quite possible because  I have designed one and it is fully functional but there is one issue with what you are trying to do.

There is actually no real production scheduling in Microsoft Dynamics AX.

Hint :  One the key to successfully do this is to dynamically update the route after the selection of the production line.

Please the diagram from this link : http://www.slideshare.net/lecadoujr/ps-capacity-management

You can also read the other related documents I posted  on that matter.

Your finished product  form and function is the same but different routes such as half ton vessel instead of a 1 tom may have different set up losses, different rates of evaporation etc .so you need to use bom variations for each route option. You can have different BOM versions  based on order quantity range which the system will auto select , or with different data effectivities e.g d pending on which is set as the current preferred BOM -you can however select any version use the line name/number as the version description.
