How to setup Item Color Dimension

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by

I am working on a customized project that customer will purchase the same item but has an option to choose different fabrics.  For example, 20 pcs of item# XYZ in white color and 40 pcs of item XYZ in black color.  Customer wants us to invoice them by only using one item# XYZ but marked with different color.

The first thing comes to my mind is to use the Dimension Group.  Once I select the color option of Dimension Group in the item detail "General" tab, I entered different color options under the setup button.

After I set up everything ready, I found that I cannot makes changes such as item description, price etc. anymore.  It keeps popping up warning "Color not specified for item XYZ."  I have to end window task manager in order to get out of the screen.

Did I setup anything wrong or if I miss any steps that causes the problem?

I appreciated if anyone can help!

    Hi Mayee,

I'm not sure what steps you have done. Can you provide a screenshot of the error? What is the exact form you are working on when you get this error?

I can list the steps if you need.

    Hi Mayee,

Please list the steps as I currently have no AX 2009 available. It looks like you are on the Item details form, but not sure which fields are filled exactly with what values.

Step 1a: Set up Inventory Dimension for “Color” – Overview

Step 1b: Set up Inventory Dimension for “Color” – General tab

Step 2: Set up color in “Inventory Parameters”

I don’t know if I need to set up “Inventory value reports”. At this moment, I did not set up because I think this is for reporting purpose only.

Step 3: Go to Item Detail to select “Dimension group”

Step 4: Go to “Setup” button to add different colors for this item.

Step 5: I also set up the Customer – Item Description and Vendor – Item Description

After setting up all this information, if I try to click anywhere of this item, the same infolog will pop up and I will be locked up at the screen.

    Hi Mayee,

Thanks for the detailed information. The settings for the Inventory value report are not related.

Step 4 should be performed before you would be able to use the field Color on the item master (step 3).

When you set the color field before creating color for the item (step 4) you can indeed expect the error. The color field on the item is used as default for e.g. orders. So it can also be left empty.

As step 5 seems to be OK, the colors are created. Can you try to create colors without specifying the color field on the item master (step3)?

If the error persists, it would be possible to use the debugger to see which method is really generating the error and under which conditions. It could be a customization. You need development skills to be able to use and understand the debugger.

Thanks Andre for your reply.  I did not setup color field for all items that have color dimensions.  But for some how after all items being setup, if I click to these items and make changes, and maybe just click save button, the same infolog will pop up and I will be locked up. :(

It would be better to use the AX debugger now to find the root cause of this error.

Thanks.  So you think my process is correct from the step of setting up Inventory Dimension to the item detail setup, right?

It seems like you have the correct steps. But as told, I'm not able to verify it currently due to a missing AX2009 environment.
