Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Archived)

Reports are running and generating slow especially to Excel file generation....

Posted on by 65

We are running Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 (SP1) and each time we run a report, it takes a while to open up, then we select our criteria, click the preview option to generate the report.  The report window has a slight delay when opening it up and then the report runs, but when it comes to outputting the report to MS Excel, it seems to take a long time to generate.  When I say a long time, a small report with 40 lines of data can take over an hour to generate it.  What is causing this slowness generation.

Any assistance on what to check, would be grateful.  Is this a software issue or a hardware issue?

Thank you for the information. To narrow it down, if you can try a client not on Citrix, that maybe is installed directly on the SQL Server that will help. Also, I hope your SQL Server is dedicated and not running other applications as that could also cause issues. I would say since it was running fine, that either the SQL DBA of your company should check to make sure  the   sp_updatestats is running nightly, and that the rebuild/reorganize of indexes is set up at least to run weekly. Make sure on SQL that you have the Max Degree of Parrallelism set to 1 which is needed for NAV to reduce blocking so that you don't break queries into multiple threads. If it runs fine from a local client on the SQL Server, then you just have to look at network OR the Citrix box as maybe it is too overloaded. Make sure the Citrix boxes are sized appropriately for the number of users. I would focus on the SQL Server tasks first though in case it is as simple as the stats and indexes being outdated.

    Nick,

Here are the answers for the questions you asked.  But, will take a look at your options and see if that is able to fix any of our issues.

    Thanks,

    Eric

Did this just start happening or has it always been slow since being on 5.0 SP1?

This has been occurring for the last couple of weeks.

Does it perform the same from all workstations?

    Yes it does.

Are you using Citrix or Terminal Services or do you have clients installed locally on each machine?

We are using Citrix Services to connect to the application server.

Are you on the SQL Server version or Native database?

    Sql Server version.

Thank you for posting on the forum.

This is a difficult question to answer based on the information. Did this just start happening or has it always been slow since being on 5.0 SP1? Does it perform the same from all workstations? Are you using Citrix or Terminal Services or do you have clients installed locally on each machine? Are you on the SQL Server version or Native database? If it did work prior, and not any longer, then i would say hardware OR if on SQL you are not running due maintenance for updating statistics and rebuilding/reorganizing indexes and thus performance is getting slower and slower as times goes on. If on Citrix or Terminal Services, have you tried using a local client to see if any difference? Have you tried running a client directly on the Server to see if that performs differently since that takes some of the networking out of the equation? If on SQL you can run a SQL Profiler with performance information to see what could be going wrong or you could use the built in NAV tools like Client Monitor with performance information to help debug also. This along with some Performance counters for disk and hardware will probably lead you to the answer. There will be many things to look at with any performance type issue, hopefully some of the information here will get you started in the right direction.
