Reserve inventory for a customer within a warehouse and have sales order reservations draw from that inventory?

This may seem like an odd request but my business is looking to set aside inventory in one of our warehouses for a specific customer.  Sales orders have not been placed, but we would like to ensure that the inventory doesn't get reserved for other customers and when a sales order is placed for this customer have it reserve this specific inventory for that sales order.  Is there a recommended process for this?  (we would rather not set up a 'logical warehouse' in our warehouse to parse out this inventory).  Any ideas?

Thanks-

    Hi Tom,

I was wondering if you can reserve stock to a sales quotation, but it seems this is not possible. You could create an inventory journal (which you have no intention of posting) and reserve inventory to that. Not sure I'd go so far as to say this was a 'recommended process'!

If you're using the Batch dimension, you could investigate using customer specific Batch attributes. I think the 'Batch reservation' form will hide Batches of inventory which has an attribute with a value that is not allowed for the customer on the order.

I'm with Guy on this one, batch attributes and batch reservation with customer specific batch attributes is the standard way to accomplish this.

If using a tracking dimension group that includes batch is too much overhead, I would look at using manual Inventory Blocking at Inventory Mgmt -> Periodic -> Inventory Blocking.  You can enter a brief description on the block and set an expected receipt date if you want planning to consider it.  Someone would need to manually release some of the inventory from the block just prior to entering the special customers sales order.

Wouldn't the batch attribute demand that all customers would have to be set up and requirements for each made and are you certain that items are not booked?

There are no supported features for this exact process so no 'recommended process' really does exist.

I'm sorry to say that warehouses are the best option.

The idea Guy proposed with an inventory journal is smart as you could write a comment in the order with particular customer details and use a separate journal name/type to differentiate from regular journals. However a sales order with a parameter set to a given value could just as easily work in the same manor.

Another way might be to do a quarantine order, but that would make some issues with your inventory numbers.

An inventory blocking order gets my vote (at least that was the process we adopted to meet the same requirement) - but I agree, I don't think that there is any like a 'recommended process' here.

Gents - Batch attributes will accomplish this standard.  See attached step by step.

The trick is to set your base batch attribute at 0-100, product specific at 0-98, and one special customer with a specific range of 99-100.    All regular customers are only suggested the 0-98 inventory when the sales line gets reserved, only the special customer gets suggested the 99-100 inventory.

@Colby this seemed pretty straight forward, but for us we cannot set the value on the customer to 99 -100.  It tells us that it must be in the range for the product, so I'm not sure how you managed to do this.  We are on 2012 R3 CU 10.

@Jake12, yeah I can't duplicate my own instructions on a CU12 environment now.  Not sure what I was doing different a couple years ago.  I'd suggest using Inventory Status if you have warehouse mgmt enabled items and warehouses.
