Upgrade BC On Premise from AU Version to BC Online W1 Version without source code

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into upgrading from our current BC 16 On-Premise AU version to the BC Online W1 version. However, we don't have access to the source code for our current on-premise setup.

Could anyone provide insights or share experiences regarding the durability and reliability of this upgrade? Specifically, how does the BC Online W1 version compare in terms of performance and stability relative to BC 16 On-Premise? Are there any particular challenges or considerations we should be aware of given that we don’t have source code access?

Your expertise and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

    Hi
You should consider that during the migration the extensions you have installed should also be migrated. Do you have the apps files?

In short, the upgrade consists of two parts: code and data. Since you cannot access the source code, there is no way to upgrade the code part. You can only imitate the existing functions and customize them again. However, the versions themselves are different, AU and W1, and cannot be upgraded directly. . . .
As for data, you can use Configuration Package to import and post data.

    Hi Yun Zhu,

Thank you for your response. So, to confirm, if we don’t have access to the source code, we can’t upgrade the code part of the application, even if we can download the app file from extension management. Regarding the version difference, does this mean that direct upgrades are not possible between AU and W1 versions? In that case, we would need to manually export and import data using a configuration package, correct?

    Hi Gdrenteria,

Yes, we can download the extension from Extension Management, but we don’t have access to the source code. We need to upgrade from BC 16 on-premises AU version to BC Online W1 version.

Are there any specific steps we need to follow for this process?

    Hi,

Yes direct migration of data not recommended as between AU & W1 difference table structure. Especially related taxation related contents. If you place AU localization related extension in W1 then you may errors in somewhere in posting routines. So in this case Configuration package based migration is better option for Business Central Migration from On-Prem to Cloud.

    Thanks and Regards,
