NAV Trial

Good Afternoon,

I am brand new to Dynamics and to this forum. Because I manage the IT Department and have a programming background, my company has tasked me with looking into a new CRM/ERP solution. Naturally, I landed here.

To get my feet wet, I've configured two VMs and downloaded Dynamics CRM. The problem is that I'm unable to locate a similar trial of the Dynamics NAV product. Is one available?

    You can download it here.

    https://mibuso.com/downloads/microsoft-dynamics-nav-w1-2016

This is the W1 version.  Which is the world wide version that nav releases.  There are localized version as well that build on top of the World wide version.

    Hello and welcome here, Tom!

Trial version of NAV is not officially available in public, however there are few links you can downloaded it directly (e.g., mibuso.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-nav-w1-2016), as other members mentioned.

Better to download the latest builds for your specific country from CustomerSource, however you would need access to that.

The best option is to contact one of your local partners with inquiry to make a demonstration or grant access to the demo version - partners usually are glad to have a chance to do this without a cost. If you do not know who are the potential partners, you can check on Pinpoint (partnercenter.microsoft.com/.../search) or write an email to itmbssup@microsoft.com with inquiry to recommend a partner.

Thank you Alexander, and thank you everyone who responded. Wow...what a difference from what I'm used to dealing with Sage products and forums. You can go days without even a view of your post let alone a reply. The download is taking place now.

We have had a rather unpleasant experience with our current Sage "partner." For that reason, the idea here is to bypass the partner all together and install, manage and develop in-house. But being so new to this product, I don't know if that's feasible. Can you tell me if there are others who take on Dynamics alone...without the use of a partner?

There are two side of it. Microsoft Dynamics NAV is a complete customizable product and in order to customize you required to have a developer license. Which is expensive and you need to have qualified people to do that also. Addition to that all the setups and configurations are bit complex comparing to sage product. However once you have configured the system properly it is just a matter of changing few settings depending on your requirement. On top of that if you do not have a partner to get support then you will be in a bit of a mess if your users came up with a total new requirement. Therefore it is always good to have a partner with you for the support.

But I know there are some companies who run Dynamics NAV without a partner and they do have their own NAV team within the company to support the user requests.

the difference might be because Sage is more stable and user-friendly, as opposed to NAV?

Bad partners can be found selling Sage, and bad partners can be found selling NAV.

What sort of Sage are you going from, and why?  What problems are you trying to solve or forestall?

NAV is customizable, which can be a major (MAJOR) downside to it.  No installation is the same, lots of areas where things can get messed up.  And because it's customizable, the partner-centric design (programming hours, tick tick, $ $) has led to the box-stock NAV product lacking many of the nice features found in products that aren't sold on a "don't worry, we'll fix / make that better" basis.

Of course, you can start learning NAV by yourself using the materials available, we will gladly share them, as well as the videos available here and via YouTube. Many things can be done via user setup.

However the most efficient way to proceed is to find a correct partner who can demonstrate the core functionality and answer your general questions, provide you with recommendations.

What is also important, is that most of serious installation of NAV require some additional development. It is both a plus and a minus of the system. It is very flexible and easy to be customized, however in many processes it requires that customization. As a client, you have very limited capabilities of modifying the system. You would need a developer's license which clients can purchase from Microsoft, but it is expensive (around 25k USD). Thus, it is usually inevitable to involve a partner if you will have a serious implementation. That is why I recommend to find such a partner from the very beginning, who can honestly tell about what system can and especially cannot, and plan the project accordingly.
