The reason why I didn't configure the number series is because we have different item code logic for different category group. We have Finished good start with FG and we have different raw material starting with different letter. I used to leave the configuration blank but I don't know why when my system upgrade to .27 version it showed the error this morning.

Any suggestion on this?

    Hello,

After upgrading to Business Central version .27, the system now enforces stricter validation for No. Series, which is why you're seeing the error when creating an Item Card without a configured series.

Previously, you could leave the No. Series blank to manually assign item codes based on category groups (like FG for Finished Goods), but the new version requires a valid No. Series to be present—even if manual numbering is used.

To resolve this, you can create a dummy No. Series with manual numbering enabled and assign it in Inventory Setup, allowing you to continue using your custom item code logic without triggering errors.

    Hi  Jainam,

What kind of dummy No Series do you suggest? If I didn't assign the number will the system auto assign on for it? I just don't want to many back and force to change the system in the future...

I would recommend creating a No. Series for items like "TEMP-0001" or something similar to signify that the item needs to be renumbered to an appropriate number. Then set it as a manual no. like below:

That can then be set as your default inventory no. and you can assign them manually.

Alternatively what I prefer is to actually create inventory templates based on my item categories. Then I create multiple no. series, one for each category. Then when you create a new item it asks you to select a template and a number is assigned accordingly.

If thats an approach you want to take you can look at setting up item templates here: Create item cards for goods or services - Business Central | Microsoft Learn
And no. relationships here (to enable more than one item no. for selection): Create number series - Business Central | Microsoft Learn

    Hi,

You can try creating separate Item Templates with specific No. Series assigned to each.. That way, when you select a template (Finished Goods, Raw Material, etc.), the correct number series is applied automatically.

    Hopes this helps.

    Hi,
, that error popped up because version 27 tightened the rules a bit. Before, you could leave the Item No. Series blank and just type your own codes (like FG…, RM…), but now BC insists that some No. Series is defined before it’ll let you create a new item.
    Here’s the easy fix:
    1. Go to No. Series and make a new one — call it something like ITEM-MANUAL.
    2. Tick Manual Nos. = Yes (so you can type your own).
    3. Leave Default Nos. = No and don’t bother adding any number-series lines.
    4. Then go to Inventory Setup and set Item Nos. = ITEM-MANUAL.
That’s it — you’ll be able to type your own item codes again.
If you use different formats for categories (like FG for finished goods and RM for raw materials), you can either:
    • Stick with that one manual series and just type them yourself, or
    • Create separate series/templates per category and turn Manual Nos. = Yes on for each one.
Basically, BC v27 just stopped allowing a totally blank No. Series setup — adding a dummy manual one gets you back to how it worked before.

Hi, The No. field on cards has always followed the standard behavior below, which hopefully will give you some hints.

If this is a problem specific to 27, you can debug it to see where the problem is, and do a small customization to work around it.

    Thanks

    Hello,

In Business Central 27, you can’t leave the No. Series blank anymore. Define one in Inventory Setup, enable Manual Nos., and continue using your own FG/RM item codes, or create separate series per category.

Can you please check the below setups .

In Inventory Setup  , Item No Series is defined or not

IF No Series is present then , check it has valid numbering and default series set to true

Check Start Date of No series and workdate you are logged in

    Workdate

If still its not working  then , check customization written on insert trigger

    Hello,

You should create a No. Series that allows manual numbering. In the No. Series setup, add a new series (e.g., MANUAL-ITEM), enable the Manual Nos. option so you can enter your own item codes like FG001 or RM001, and leave the starting and ending numbers blank since automatic numbering won’t be used.
