Adobe (send to Mail Recipient (pdf))

Posted on by 165

I don't have Adobe, did anyone try to use this Send to Pdf feature in GP with Microsoft Print to Pdf. I am on Server 2019 running on Xenapp using GP 2018. The Print to pdf is free. Why can't I use that instead of buying Adobe?

Any ideas?

It looks like something was already posted. It is inline with what I need. I upvoted it. Link below.

    @Beat

I tried that but my users are pre BC. They didn't like that option. Printer queue added complexity. Anyways. I do agree with you. Adobe is a marketing software now. But I have no choice.

    Sean,

I've dealt with that kind of request many times and directed the users to use a PDF generator "printer" queue (like PDFCreator or CutePDF) as buying a costly Adobe Write license isn't really going to solve all the problems.. There are other issues you'll run into with Adobe, and I've stopped recommending to use Adobe products past the version 8.x in the days where it was more or less working simple and easy..

Nowadays Adobe products are bloated software which contains a lot of unwanted features and you pay a lot of money for an over-rated product.. IMHO Free tools or low-cost SW does the same job more efficiently and with way less resource demand (Adobe Acrobat is almost way over 500MB installed, plus has a lot of memory resident processes in the background).

Just my 2cts, but you're possibly better off with some free PDF print drivers...

PS: I've witnessed cases where Adobe Writer X would produce half-backed GP reports.. with only the top part of the page.. every other way of printing the report would end up just fine.

    Hi Sean,

If you want the Send To functionality changed, your best bet is to get a suggestion out here:

    https://experience.dynamics.com/ideas/

If it gets some votes, it will show development that they should circle back and expand on its functionality so it works with other PDF writers.

I hear you, this is what I was worried about. Our users are used to the old functionality. It will be hard to teach them the email button. Maybe on the next release. For now, I will pay for Adobe licenses.

Thanks for the explanation. Both of you.

    Hi Sean,

Send to PDF was built with Adobe functionality directly tied in. You cannot use any other PDF Writers to use the Send to PDF functionality. This is not likely to change, as the Send To functionality is generally seen as "old" functionality.

If you are already printing to screen, you can print to the PDF printer, then attach to a manually created email.

If you want to use different, automatic PDF functionality, then you would need to use the Email options on almost any report, then click the email button rather than printing the report to screen. This is what we consider the "new" functionality, and doesn't require a PDF printer at all. Instead it uses Word's built-in PDF functionality.

As Beat mentioned, Templates are required for this process. You will also want to be on GP 18.2+, or the most recent GP 2016 Year-end update, as new Office rules required us to rework our Template functionality.

    Thanks!

Yeah, I saw that too but I just don't want to use Adobe. I have to pay for Adobe and I thought can we use the built-in Microsoft pdf creator. I right now the Send to is grayed out because Adobe isn't installed.

    Hi Sean,

See Microsoft's requirements for sending e-mails in GP:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../system-requirements

You have to enable the Word Templates in order to use PDF reports for e-mailing..
