Aggregating text field in a chart

I thought I was able to do this in the past, but for the life of me, can't figure out what I did to make it work. I think it was a simple xml edit, but not sure what it was

So we have opportunities and each opportunity has a phase, but the previous guy created a text field for the phase and made it a text field. so now I have about 6 phases, that he fill in via code. I can query the field "new_phasesstatus" and I clearly see phase 1, phase 2, and so on.

here is my xml code

All I'm trying to do is display the count of opportunity by phase.

Final out come should be:

Phase 1 --------------20

Phase 2 -------------------------30

Phase 3 ------10

What I get is

phase 1 ---1

phase 1 ----1

Until 20

phase 2 ----1

phase 2-----1

until 30

How do I combine these. I tried adding groupby, aggregate, count. nothing works.

Hi Bill,

Only the value of the phase field is exactly the same to be aggregated together. So please check whether the 20 values of phase 1 are exactly the same.

For example, there are two Opportunities that new_phasesstatus is Phase 1, and three Opportunities that new_phasesstatus is Phase 2, and one Opportunities that new_phasesstatus is Phase 3.

The chart is as follow.

If I add a space in the one of the text "Phase 1" of new_phasesstatus.

Then it s value is different from other Phase 1. The chart will show two Category.

So for text fields, it is not recommended to aggregate on the chart. Because we can’t ensure that users enters the text in full compliance with the format. It is recommended to aggregate for the Option Set field.

Thank you, it did have a space in some. Once I fixed that it worked.
