Barcodes and user identification

Deal all - we are planning to use NAV to scan barcodes and enter consumption data. We are planning to have a single PC that several users can use. Is there any way that NAV can identify each user before they scan barcodes and enter data without them having to sign into NAV as different users each time. Ideally we want the user to scan an ID badge or and ID code containing a their own barcode and then NAV will instantly identify the user, and they can then continue to scan and enter data, once finished the second user can use the PC scan their ID badge and then enter more data?

Thanks all

    Re: Barcodes and user identification

    Hi,

Definitely possible, we have built a custom solution similar to what you mention above for a customer (Back in 2005 i think - Manufacture of medical implants) where the users had a name tag with a bar code on and to start the transaction they first scanned their tag,

This logged them in and tracked them as a Dimension (We went with Dimensions so that the details would post with the transactions and allow us to do a lot more reporting by scanning user)

Once they were "scanned in" they scanned the job card (Physical piece of paper making the rounds with the work), this would begin a timer that when they scanned the job as complete the system would post the production with manual flushing and the exact time spent (just remember to have a stop timer option for overnight and tea breaks)

Hopefully the above gives you a bit of an idea about how a process could work, i would suggest thinking how the various jobs physically move around the site currently, look at how the process within NAV work relating to manufacturing, then look at how you can best join the processes together using bar-coding to automate it

Your partner may also be able to assist with ideas if they have done something similar on a previous site

Shout if you have any other ideas or questions and i will be happy to chat with you about them
