How to extend "Invent Version Id" field size of base field ?

I have to extend the size of the system generated field ,From /Invent Dim/ Table containing field name / Invent Version id / field i have to increase the string size !

Is it recommended by Microsoft to increase the String size of the field ?if no then what's the reason ?

Hi JJDunaid,

Please note that this InventVersionId is used in multiple tables. So if you change the EDT string size, it will affect all places.

These are the conditions to increasing EDT string size:
- The EDT you want to modify must not extend another EDT
- The new string size must be equal to or larger than the base EDT

I think the EDT you want to change is "EcoResItemVersionName" and this one extends a base EDT. So I don't think you will be able to change it's string size in the first place. Therefore, the option you have is to change it on table level.
I mean create a new EDT that extends "EcoResItemVersionName", put the string size you need. Then go to "InventDim" Table and change the EDT for "InventVersionId" field

This was partially discussed in JJDunaid's duplicate thread Is it recommended by Microsoft to increase the String size of the field?. For convenience, let me repeat my reply here:

Of course, the recommendation is using as much standard functionality as possible, therefore no one will recommend a change that it's needed. But if you need it, you can do it.

Hi JJDunaid,

To answer the 2nd part of your question. I think Microsoft made extensions so that if we need to do such thing like increasing string size then we have the option to do so. If it's very bad maybe they wouldn't have allowed it. So if you are obligated to do it, then you have no other option.
