When I set up a bank account under the cards>financials>checkbook, it disappears and says its not available.

The Checkbook Maintenance window is used to setup a checkbook. The Account Maintenance window is used to create an Account.
What steps are you taking after setting up a checkbook that is giving you this message? What window are you getting this message in?
More information will be needed to give insight on this issue.
