How to create enable "Activities" under Communication and Collaboration for an Activity Entity? Need Activity type entity in Regarding field as lookup.

Hello,

I am curious about a few things when it comes to Activity type Entities, Activities under Communication and Collaborations section, and creating custom entities.

I have some requirements for some new features in an application of mine. I am unsure to use an OOB entity and customize it, or create a new one. I have been playing around with some things and know that when you create a new entity with "Define as an activity entity" you then cannot add the "Activities" option under Communication and Collaboration.

I am in a pickle because I am playing with using the "Letter" entity, which is Defined as an activity entity, BUT I also want this option to be available in the "Regarding" fields of another custom entity.

I've read that the "Activities" option under Communication and Collaboration is necessary for those type of records to be available in the Regarding field of other entities.

There is an OOB entity for Campaign Activity, it has BOTH "Define as activity" AND Activities" option under Communication and Collaboration:

Any idea if there is a custom way to do this for a new entity? Edit existing entity to enable this?

    Hi damccracken,

Through my test, custom activity entity (check Define as an activity entity) can’t check ‘Activity+’ option under ‘Communication and Collaboration’, which is by-design.

(Note: OOB Campaign Activity seems to be a special example, you can't replicate its settings on a custom entity),

As you mentioned, Checking the option ‘Activity+’ is a requirement for the entity to appear in the regarding field, but Regarding field is a special field type, which can just exist in activity type entity.

So You can't set the 'regarding' field with an activity entity. If you want to link one activity to another activity entity, then you could create an additional relationship for this.

For example, create a N: 1 relationship between the ‘test activity’ entity and the ‘Letter’ entity. In this way, we can fill the ‘Letter’ record in the new lookup field on the ‘test activity’ form.

I have the same question and confirmed with the Microsoft CSS team.

It's by design, an Activity Entity can't lookup to another activity.
