Can we access Production SQL DB ?

Hi everyone,

Just need some confirmation, when F&O (Cloud based, not On Premise) is in Production, and so we can say it's "Went Live", Can our IT reach or connect to its database ? Lets say by using SQL Management Studio or even to use it as a source of Azure Data Factory stuff ?

Haven't experience a real project Go Live before, so it is kinda in the 'myst' for me, as currently I still can access the Azure SQL DB through SSMS, even we have create a scenario whereby we transfer data from Azure SQL DB which is actually the database of our F&O (still in development phase), with Azure Data Factory to pull data to ADLS.

So the confusion is, if we can't reach/connect to that Azure SQL DB when F&O went Live, this scenario is useless, am I correct to say that ?

Kindly advice,

Thanks,

I have the same question (0)

    Hi VoltesDev,

Do you mean directly connecting from outside to Azure SQL database of a production environment hosted by Microsoft in cloud?

    Then you cannot.

You can try to  use web services or access your own DB  with this DB data.

    Hi Blue,

Yes, from outside by means currently we created Azure Data Factory that will get data directly from F&O Azure SQL DB (still the same tenant) and then copy it to our own ADLS.

So with your statement, and my question, it is correct to say that the Data Factory scenario will not work (in production), right? Sorry, understand this is like I'm asking twice, just to re-confirm.

    Thanks,

    Hi VoltesDev,

Yes, there is no way to directly access that database.

You can try to restore the production data into UAT environment so that you can directly access to this database.

Hi VoltesDev, for F&O production environment there is no way to access directly, DBA can monitor the DTU\ index fragment and kill process etc. via LCS.

So, is that why for F&O we have the "Enable Data Lake Integration" feature?

Or at least using BYOD for the transfer to Data Lake ?

But actually I'm still curios on how or why Azure Data Factory cannot access Dynamics F&O Production, since it supposed to be a universal tools for Cloud Datawarehouse. I'm not sure this the correct forum, but since it is F&O I think it is still applicable.

    Thanks.

The problem isn't in tools, but in permissions. The database is managed by Microsoft and they would explicitly allow you to connect (which they won't).

I don't know what you're trying to achieve, but it's possible the Data Lake or BYOD will help you with that.

I didn't try using ADF connector mentioned in the  below article but the ADF connector supports pulling data from D365 FO . The article mentions that its in preview state. However exporting data to BYOD or data lake should fulfill your  reporting requirements .

    Hi Martin,

Noted that. It is just the ADLS integration is not reliable yet, I means it is still under Public Preview now and being pushed several time. Also because Azure DF has several advantage which is they have the Dataflow and transformation tools inside in which BYOD, even the ADLS integration cannot support.

I think that is my concern on why even with Azure DF, we're unable to retrieve data from Production SQL DB. Still what we access is Data entities, which is build for this integration, it is not retrieve data directly to F&O tables. Even OData can retrieve that as it is public artifact.

    Thanks,

    Hi Sukrut,

You type as the same time as me. Well if OData, it is then make sense. I take a quick look on the link you provided. Bottom line is cannot access Production DB, but can with OData, one problem is only I think OData is slow. But of course, you cannot have everything.

Thank you guys for all this insights

    Hi Voltes,

Can you provide information about what information you want to access and for what purpose? The future direction would be moving data to ADLS. Part of OData slowness is caused by the number of tables and x++ coding on data entities. Microsoft is investing in the option to move table contents to Azure Data Lake and then use e.g. Spark or Synapse to format the data for e.g. BI insights.
