Sales Transactions for Discontinued Inventory Items

(1) ShareShare

Hello

When an item becomes discontinued we currently change the Item Type to Discontinued even if there is still a quantity on hand.

There does not appear to be any option on sales transactions, or visibility that it is discontinued. Is there any way to prevent sales orders for being raised for a quantity not above the quantity on hand? It doesn't seem logical for you to be able to create a backorder for a discontinued item.

Inactivating the item does not allow for it's sale at all, and in the Sales Order Processing Setup Options marking Allow Sale of Discontinued Items allows backorders.

Is there any setup solutions?

Thanks

Tania

    Hi Tania,

As you already said, GP out of the box doesn't provide the option you require.

I suggest creating a customization for it, my prefer method is using a Dexterity Trigger, but there are other tools you can use too like VBA.

Tania, I'd suggest that when you set an item as discontinued you also unmark the checkbox to allow backorders in the Options section of the item card.

    Angel,

Great answer! It won't display that it's discontinued, but it will certainly solve the backorder problem.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Hi Angel, this is great thankyou. I did not think of this. I will set up a Smartlist with reminder for 2 things... Any items marked discontinued where the item 'Allow Backorders' (at an item level) has not been unmarked (I feel like they will forget to do this second step for a while). Also another one for discontinued and active items where the Quantitity on Hand has run down to zero which they can now mark as inactive.

    Thankyou :)
