Constant Printing Problems Since Year End Updates and Recent Windows Updates

So, everyone of my GP 2018 users who are on the HR/Payroll/Paybles side keep having annoying print issues. Sometimes the error is benign and they hit cancel and then try again...

pastedimage1680718775793v1.png

Other times, it locks up or crashes GP or even crashes payroll processing for a single user.

And we've spent way too much money with no resolution with our GP partner. I can't pay them anymore if they can't resolve this.

One thing I've noticed is on our Windows 11 (all updates applied) users get this print windows that specifies Dexterity for Microsoft Dynamic's GP...and we never had this window before...only when printing from HR/Payroll/Payables...and only Windows 1..

So I found a band-aid where it restores the old print dialog window and one of my users has no issues printing anymore. But I don't want to apply this to everyone because I feel upcoming upgrades will reverse this and this isn't the fix.

Anyone else experience this?

Did anyone try recreating the reports dictionaries for GP (reports.dic) and for HR (I think something like hrprpts.dic)? Since you say this started after an update, that's the first thing I'd look at.  I never leave the old reports or forms dictionaries after an update (even a small service pack) because they so frequently get corrupted during the update process.  Sorry, I realize this is a two year-old post, but I'm dealing with a printer issue right now and ran across this...

What was your band-aid?  We are having the same issue except we have different error code 0x80010105

We were told to import this into Registry

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Print\UnifiedPrintDialog]

    "PreferLegacyPrintDialog"=dword:00000001

We are not running GP as Administrator...though the CFO is a local Administrator on his system.

However, I just saw on this post: community.dynamics.com/.../how-do-you-change-from-dexterity-for-gp--print-to-using-the-windows-print-options

A fix for this is coming in GP Power Tools next week...

Update - I see now there are other posts about this print dialog box. I did try that registry fix for the user and it won't work on his PC but still works on our CFO's PC.

Thanks for all of the advice so far.

That other issue where GP was locking up when running payroll has been resolved.

But the "Windows 11 Print Dialogue Box" in GP 2018 still crashes for users...so going to comb through all the advice to see what works best for us...

May I ask are you running GP as Administrator? Can you try installing GP in some other folder beside C:\Program Files (x86)? Can you paste a copy of your DYNAMICS.SET file here? What security software are you running? Do you have a third-party printing product installed?

To add to what everyone has mentioned, instead of uninstalling Dynamics GP, you can do the following for testing:

    1.   Have all users log out of Dynamics GP on the one server or workstation where they're seeing this issue with payroll printing, then rename the GP directory from something like this >> C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\ to something like this >> C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP_OLD\

    2. In Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-click on this instance of GP and choose 'Change'. In the options window that opens, choose the 'Repair' option and run it through successfully.

    3. The Repair option will re-create the entire GP directory you just renamed, under the original name, to include all folders, files, and modules, but without any third-party products, customizations, etc. Modified forms and reports dictionary files also will not be present.

    4. What we'd then want to do is have users login to Dynamics GP via this 'new' GP directory and see if we can still re-create the issues when printing with payroll to see if they can recreate the issue of GP crashing and/or this 'Dexterity for Microsoft Dynamics GP - Print' window.

--if these issues are not seen on the 'new' GP directory, then we'd want to first add back any modified forms and reports dictionary files first, then test again to see if the payroll print issues return.

--if still not, then add back any third-party products or customizations, one by one, testing after each one to see if the payroll print issue returns or not. If it does, then you probably have the potential cause of the issue on the workstations.

The only thing we've seen cause Dynamics GP to crash, that we're aware, is the use of VBA with Dynamics GP, which we've blogged about a few times.

Otherwise, we've put together this blog as well, with different things we've seen cause Dynamics GP to crash/close over the years, so it may be worth looking at this blog as well:

RE: Constant Printing Problems Since Year End Updates and Recent Windows Updates

    Hey Brian,

I talked with a System Engineer and they have seen this window. One thing they have done is set this window back like you have done already for one machine to resolve similar issues.  I think your best option here is to revert the window back as it corrects your issue on one machine as it appears to be the change of the print window. Guess it depends on how much further you want to spend on this since you know of a solution already.

If you do not want to do this, I have some additional information below.

I had a printer issue a few weeks ago with an windows 11 machine where it would not print correctly. The Print window you are seeing is due to windows 11 it appears.

What we ended up doing to correct the issue was to go into the Printer Setup in GP (Microsoft Dynamics GP | Printer Setup) and change the Default Printer. We then changed it back. After doing so, it started to print correctly.

You can give this a try and see if it makes a difference.

Another thing you can try is updating your printer driver. There could be a problem or not be compatible.

If your reports are modified that keep having the problem, you try setting them back to the Core reports and see if the same thing happens. Modified reports are not guaranteed to not have any issues after an upgrade/update as things to do change from version to version.

Beats option to uninstall and re-install would be a great test. If a new install gives problems, there is likely something environmental causing this.

If these are network printers, can you try a local one? Does this make a difference?

Were there any issues with the upgrade that you are aware?

If you print to screen and not to the printer, do you have any problems? If not, this could point to your printer being the problems. If you redirect printers, could be a problem there as well.

One last thing, the error states there is a problem with the printer configuration. Have you reviewed your setting on the printer?

Honestly, with so many problems, it might be best you open a case with Microsoft to take a look. Since you are having issues in multiple modules during printing, this would be a systems case if you create one due to multiple modules experiencing the issue.

    I hope this helps!

    Thank you!

    Brandon | Microsoft Support Engineer.

At this point I am going to suggest you completely uninstall GP and remove the GP program folder using file explorer. Have you ever installed GP before? I have a few thousand times. I can try to talk you through what to do using this forum or give me 30-60 minutes of billable time and we are done.

It would be helpful if you could paste your DYNAMICS.SET file here. Also, exactly what version of GP are you running? It should be GP 18.5.1635. Feel free to send me a PM.

RE: Constant Printing Problems Since Year End Updates and Recent Windows Updates

So let me give a little more context.

I'm the IT director and solo IT person for this company for going on 12 years now.

For the bulk of those years, we used an individual consultant who would handle our dynamics Great Plains needs especially on the year end updates or upgrading versions.

Because of his frustrations with some of our management, he let us go and we went with another company. We'd work with that company for a couple years but then they decided to leave everything except for Dynamics 365.

So this year we went with another company who did our year and update and I've never had so many problems before.

The person who they now have running payroll has a new computer that I install Great plains 2018 on and then I applied the year and update to it. He keeps crashing when he runs payroll and it gets to the point where it has to print.

We spent almost $2,000 with our current partner to figure out the problem and they haven't yet and we don't want to spend any more money on it. We've rebuilt his dictionary we've copied over dictionaries nothing seems to fix the problem.

Then we have other users who have random print issues and one even locks up when he runs inventory. Again it comes to the point where it prints. All these users are on Windows 11. And it pops up with that dexterity for Microsoft Great plains print window.

We also have two purchasing agents who don't use anything but the purchasing side One is on Windows 11 and the other is on Windows 10 and they have no problems.
