From there, it brings up a Usage data table.  There are various tabs with tons of information within each and I wanted to know the best practices for removing user data from these tables from a corrupt account standpoint.

  • Are there common culprit areas I should check first?  I know it can "depend on the problem", but I bet some tabs are more prone to error than others.
  • Is it advisable to jump between each tab and nuke all entries of the corrupt user?

I guess my overall goal is how to use this tool in the most minimalistic manner as possible.  Having to completely nuke a user from these tabs is OK if it works, but it would be nice to preserve their customizations if feasible.

Thanks.

The areas you should check depend on what type of user issues you are having. The question is what do you mean by "corrupt users".

The usage data contains anything from last values used (eg the last parameters you used to run a report will pop back in automatically), they could contain the size you set a form to when you closed it (if the form supports saving its size), it contains the "intellimorph" changes (ie removing and re-arranging fields on your screen), etc.

There is not really a recommended solution of which ones to clear, without knowing where your users are having trouble.

There is no issue in clearing all usage data (there is one button to clear all tabs), but users may lose saved queries, customized screens, etc. I've also seen users freak about because they lost "default values", but that is a training thing, there are no default values stored in usage data, only last-used data. So losing default values means you no longer remembered what you put in the first time you ran it.

Thanks for the response.  It sounds like the best way to use this tool then is to make educated guesses about where the issue *likely* is, test, then progress to remove additional data until the problem is resolved.  Over time, you would begin to get a better "feel" of how to pinpoint issues.

Why did you post this and not the answer? You answered the question with no real information. Corrupted user data is the problem and it happens often. But each customization entry gives no explanation to what it controls so it makes it hard to fix the problem say for example printing. There is a customization for printing and in the list under usage data it does not say or give any indication to what that maybe or could be. Example I had a user mess with the Y splitter to the point where you could no longer do sales order because they pulled the splitter to the bottom of the screen. This was an easy delete the YSplitter under usage data to fix it.  Microsoft should at least give a break down of what each item does instead of giving no information on such things. Some people have 250 different configurations and no explanation, if they have a problem in one there is no way to tell what does what with such generic titles.

If a user says there having problems within a certain form you can go into the usage data and find the form delete it and have the user check to see if the issue has resolved. Usage data could be changed to be more of a configuration and easier use at current it can be a jumbled mess.
