Microsoft Telephony API (TAPI) - is there any substitute?

I heard that the telephone integration with the AX (TAPI) has deprecated and no longer supported on recent versions of AX (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn507153.aspx)

Is there any substitute or a different solution to make a connection between AX and a telephone system?

    We were playing with integration with 3cx.  The client program allows you to write your own "plug-ins" in .NET.  We wrote a plug-in that talks to AX by named pipes, which is a convenient way to talk to the AX client without hammering the database.  It worked and we were able to respond to an incoming call event in the AX client.  Unfortunately solutions like this are specific to each telephone system.
