ctrl L

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Why is it that when logged into one company,  L (for find) takes me directly to a window where I type in that I'm looking for but when I'm logged into a different company, the same  L takes me to a window where I still have to click on the binocular icon to get to the input.  In the first company, the binoculars don't even show up on the tools.

This led me to the answer.  For some reason, under the user security, the user for a given company was not assigned to anything for the alternate forms ID.  In the one company that worked correctly, the user was also set to power user.  I selected the second company, set the power user on and also selected "default" for the alternate forms ID.  Now works correctly in both companies as well as for a second user which was having the same problem.

This is definitely related to the security and which alternate modified forms are assigned to this user, there is an old article from David comparing the two lookup forms as related to this issue on Why do my Lookup windows look different?

Therefore, to make sure that you problem is resolved, check the associated "Alternate modified forms and reports" as mentioned above by the Gents.

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

Don one of the windows that you should check on - regarding the security settings - is User Security - enter your User ID - choose the company with the look up that you like - then choose COPY (on the menu bar) and choose the other company in the pop up window.  Click on OK and then on Save.

This will roll down the exact same security from one company to the other.

Log off of GP and back in again to reset the security - then test.

    Let us know what happens.

These security settings are unique to each company but the user list is global. I would try Tools->Utilities->System->Reconcile->Security Assignment Alternate/Modified Operations in the company in which is does not work. I would also ask if this problem exists for all users? If you go to Tools->Setup->System->User Security is a user ID specified under Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports ID?

When I do the ctrl L in one company, I get one screen, when I do it in the other company, I get the other screen that has the binocular.  They both have the same name, checkbooks.  I looked up the alternate form as suggested.  In both companies, it is set to smartlist for the default user and checkbooks.  Plus, I get this difference anywhere that I use the ctrl L so it must be something more global.

what is the name of the windows that displays on both the company? I hope, it is the same name, in this case, the lookup window on one company loads the Microsoft Dynamics lookup and the other company loads the smartlist lookup. But both loads the same data but only the look and feel differs. It is not an issue only the setup on access to the window needs to be changed.

If this is case, Goto>>Tools>>Setup>>Systems>>Alternate/Modified Forms and report and check the option selected for the specific form and change the access.

    Attached the screenshot for reference.

There are no third party applications.  Very simple setup, generic GP.  I get a different window when I do ctrl L in one company than in the other.  Someone said the picture has to be less than 48KB.  I cant figure out how to take a snip and get it that small.

    Hi Don,

The functionality of the Lookup button as follows:

The CTRL +L is the short for the lookup, whether it is a lookup to the master record or its a transactions, the lookup button will be linked to the field. So, whenever a user focus the linked field and does the CTRL +L it will automatically opens the linked lookup Icon. (e.g Focus the customer Number field on the Customer Maintenance and do the CTRL+L, it will open the Customer Lookup)

As per your earlier comment, check on where the cursor focus on both the company windows. Can you confirm ,It is a standard Microsoft Dynamics GP window or customized by 3rd party applications ?

    Hi Don,

Do you have the 3rd party product Smartfill from Rockton software installed in either company? https://www.rocktonsoftware.com/products/dynamics-gp/smartfill It sounds like it might be installed and active in one of the companies but not the other.

    Regards,

    Kirk
