Help With Upgrading RMS/SQL to New PC

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I have been using RMS since 2006.  When it was set up the database was installed on SQL 2000.  We currently have RMS 2.0.0123 installed on an XP pro operating system.  I know I'm on borrowed time.

My goal is to export the existing RMS database off the old system and install it on a new PC.

I have purchased a new PC which has Windows 8 installed on it.

I have already  downloaded SQL 2008 express, loaded from my disk the original RMS 2.0 (now I need to download and install all the updates) and have the backed up data base from my existing POS system. I'm hoping there is a detailed procedure on how to

connect the SQL/RMS/database all together.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fred

RE: Help With Upgrading RMS/SQL to New PC

    Hello Ed,

    Thank you for assisting Fred.

Microsoft Dynamics RMS 2.0 Feature Pack 2 or higher is already officially supported with Windows 8 Professional or higher. We are working to update the System Requirements page. But there should not be any problems running RMS 2.0 FP2 or higher on Windows 8.

Two caveats to the above statement:

    1. Neither Microsoft SQL Server 2005 nor Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express are supported on Windows 8. Therefore, they would also not be supported with RMS on Windows 8.

    2. There is an issue that is caused by Internet Explorer 10.0 and it's inability to interpret the code correctly from the previous RMS HTML Status Bars.

There is a blog post that shows how to resolve this issue:

How to fix HTML Status Bars that do not populate after you upgrade to Internet Explorer 10.0

Note - The default files will be updated as part of RMS 2.0 Service Pack 5 due out this fall.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

First make sure you are running SQL 2008 R2 SP1  for windows 8.  Also note windows 8 is not officially supported and has increased file level acl security which might cause you problems.  Also make to turn off or decrease UAC or you will have problems.  When you install sql server make sure to pick mixed mode (windows and sql authenication) and enter a password for the sa account.

You will also need to install the 2008 R2 SMO package, CLR package, and backward compatibility (BC)

you can find these at www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx  under install instructions.

Move the backup database file to the new computer.  Open the RMS Administrator program.  Togo File Menu and connect to SQL Server.  Select master as the database.

Then under Database menu, select create.  Work through the wizard and select your backup file from the other computer.

Then togo File-> Configuration.  Under the database tab configure the connection to the new database server.  You will need the password entered when you installed sql server.

Let us know if you need more help.
