On browsing through http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa631678.aspx, I noticed 100s of tables with a 'DEL' prefix. Any idea on what are those used for.

You can find an official explanation here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa854590.aspx
In short, tables (and other entities) that are prefixed with DEL_ are marked for deletion in next version of Ax and are used in data upgrade. These objects are removed from the DB once their corresponding SysDeletedObjects key is disabled.
Thank you so much! It makes complete sense to me now.
