What are the purposes of posting groups?

Posting groups in different places are normally used to connect your sub ledger entity (bank, Customer, Vendor, Item etc) to your main ledger (corresponding control accounts in Chart of accounts)
In simple sentence: Posting Group determines to which General Ledger the effects shall take place during a transaction.
Posting Groups are used to create these links between the different application areas and the General Ledger application area.
