Time recording AX 2012 R3: Break time runs on production order

Time recording AX 2012 R3: Break time runs on production order
We want to implement time recording in AX 2012 and I have the following problem.
The break time is reported as working time on the started production order.

Production time: 0,24 h
I think the correct time is: 0.166 h
The break time over 0,08 h is to much on the production order!
Is there a possibility in AX that the break does not run on the production time?
So to speak an auto stop and after the break the production time runs again?

thank you very much

Marcel

Good morning, afternoon, or evening depending on your location!

This is a challenge we’ve seen before with time recording in AX 2012 R3. Essentially, the system by default treats break time as part of the production order’s working time if it isn’t explicitly separated out. That’s why you’re seeing 0.24 h instead of the expected 0.166 h – the extra time (over approximately 0.08 h) is being captured as “working” rather than as a pause.
Here are a few approaches you can consider:
    1. Configure Breaks as an Indirect Activity:
In AX 2012, you can set up your breaks as “indirect activities” in the Time and Attendance module. Doing so means they won’t be lumped into the production order’s working time. Instead, you can later adjust the production time separately. Ensure that the break activity is mapped to a category that excludes its duration from production time calculations.
    2. Auto-Stop / Auto-Pause Logic (Customization):
Out of the box, AX 2012 doesn’t provide a straightforward “auto-stop” for production time when a break is taken. One workaround is:
      • Custom Event Handling: Develop a lightweight customization (via X++) that listens for the start of a break (based on the activity code) and “pauses” the time clock on the production order.
      • Resume After the Break: Once the break ends, the time tracking resumes automatically.
This requires identifying the appropriate events in the time recording workflow and adjusting the posted time accordingly.
    3. Post-processing Adjustments:
Another approach used in some environments is to let users record the time as usual and then adjust the production order time manually via a route card journal (or a negative time entry) to remove the break time once it’s been identified. This is less automated but might work if a customization isn’t feasible immediately.
    4. Review Setup in HR Module:
      Double-check your configuration under:
      • HR > Setup > Time and Attendance > Indirect Activities Categories
      • Ensure that break-related activities are correctly set up so that they are not aggregated into production working time.
Because the out-of-box features don’t include an auto-stop functionality for breaks, many organizations opt for a small customization or a process change such as the negative time adjustment on a route card.

    Hope this helps some!

    Hi Marcel,

In AX 2012 R3, if breaks aren’t defined properly, they can get counted as working time on the production order.

    To address this:

    1. Check your working time template under Organization administration > Setup > Calendars > Working time templates. Make sure the break is added as a non-working time interval. This ensures that capacity and time recording exclude break time.

    2. If you're using the Job registration or Production Execution screen, the system won’t auto-deduct break time unless explicitly defined

    3. For true auto-stop behavior during breaks, you’d need:

To configure the Time and Attendance module.

Have workers clock in and out or record breaks as indirect activities, which are not linked to production orders and thus don’t inflate order time.

Please also confirm if you're using Time and Attendance or only Job registration

    Regards,

    Zain

    Hello Zain,
I'm not interested in the capacity calculation in the organization management, the break is deducted correctly and there are only 7.59 hours available per day, not 8 hours.
I want to use the job registration and have already tried this with the break.
This is how I have set the time and attendance:

I'm not sure if I understand your 3 point exactly.
Do you mean the employees should manually log out of the production order before the break and then click on break (indirect activity) and log back in to the production order after the break?

    Thank you for your feedback

    Hello Holly,
I have tried the indirect method, but the costs are still too high on the production order.
I can see it in the employee's confirmation overview, but that doesn't get me anywhere.
This means that I can only achieve my goal with a little programming.
For example, when the break button is pressed, the employee is logged out of the production order and after the break, the programming automatically logs the employee back on to the previously started order, or the employee has to start again manually.
    Is this correct?
    Thank you for your feedback
