Batch order and backflushing principle of BOM/Formula components

Hello all,

I have a question regarding the Batch order functionality (process manufacturing) in relation to the backflushing principle of BOM/Formula components.

I created a simple Batch order by using a PlanningItem. The PlanningItem consists of 2 Co-products as end product and 2 Raw materials in the BOM. I am trying to report the batchorder as finished and set the Automatic BOM consumption parameter to 'Always' for each of the Co-product lines in the Report as Finished screen. According to this technet document is should be possible: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh328602.aspx.  But no pickinglist journal is created and no bachflushing is performed.

So my question is: is it or isn't it possible to use the BOM backflushing principle in combination with Batchorders and PlanningItems?

Thanks in advance,

JayKay

Hi a - did you ever get an answer to this? I'm experiencing the same issue.

We have a Planning item Batch order that consumes a variety of raw materials, all set to flush on finish. The order produces 2 different co-product finished items. When we RAF the Co-products I'm expecting the flushing principal set to be observed, and a picking list created and posted in accordance with the RAF - but as yet can't get I to work! This can't be right surely?!

    Many thanks

    Ellie

    Hi Ellie,

What version of AX 2012 do you use? And what CU?

I believe there is a bug in reporting as finished a Co-product in a planning item scenario (i.e. it doesn't happen if the works order is for a Formula item). I will try to dig out which hotfixes I thought were responsible for solving it.

    Hi Guy

Thanks for the reply - I've been testing everything I can think of to get it to work!

version running R3 CU8, 6.3.1000.309 (discussing moving to latest CU)

I haven't found anything fix wise yet, but likely I'm not looking in the right place!

    Your help is much appreciated

You're welcome. We had a problem, also on R3 CU8. We debugged until we found ourselves in a class called ProdMultiReportFinished, and via that we found two hotfixes on LCS:

3063481 Cannot report as finished partially with by-products

3161409 "Item number has not been completely released" error when reporting the production order as finished

We never worked out which was responsible for fixing it - we just took the updated code from a CU11 environment.

So the problem in your scenario, I believe, is that when doing the RaF of a Co-product on a Planning item production order, AX is not always using the values you specify on the 'General' tab of the RaF dialogue. It is actually (and incorrectly) using what is set on the 'Default values'.

You should be able to test this. Recreate your RaF, and set the 'Automatic BOM Consumption' as you want. Then hit 'Default values', and set it as you want there too. Then hit 'OK' to close the Default values form, then post the RaF. I hope you find that AX will attempt to create a picking list.

Thanks, I will have a look at the hotfixes you have noted and see about getting them dropped in to test

Unfortunately with testing - including what you have suggested re the RAF form Defaults, still no picking is generated even using the flushing set to 'Always' (both general and defaults). No Backflushing is triggered (all items in the formula are set to flush on finish). Very strange really as works just fine for formula items. We've found a few issues around co-products and already applied a hotfix to resolve not being able to RAF the full qtys.

    Thanks again for your help

    Hi Ellie/Guy,

Were you able to find the solution for this?

We're also experiencing same error for planning formula and co-products, but same set-up works well with other formula items.

Error "Item number (formula line) has not been completely released" appears every time we try to RAF the co-products.

I try to RAF by un-ticking end job box in one of the co-products, and run RAF again to end the job for all. This appears to work, but item in the formula line is not consumed (no inventory transaction) and no picking list journal is generated.

    We're using R3 CU9.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello Sacha,

You use the word 'Planning formula' which sounds confusion for me. Do you create the Batch order for an item of type "Planning item" or "Formula"?

But you cannot backflush on a Batch order with an Item of type "Planning item".

The reason why you get this error message is because the batch order expects that you consume the Formule line items. The trick is the Default values form within the Report as Finished form tick in here 'End-mark picking list' followed by OK. It doesn't matter which Co-product line you selected.

It took me a very long time to find this 'hidden' feature. I won't judge this solution. I only tell you how it works.

    Hi Sacha,

We installed the hotfixes the Guy suggested but unfortunately this didn't resolve the issue. As JayKay has mentioned below, the standard code doesn't seem to work when trying to back-flush against the Planning Item. We have had to modify the code in the end so that it can back-flush as we need when each Co-product is RAF. It looks like it was designed to only support manual picking, which sort of makes sense. You do need to consider the logic around the auto back-flush to ensure that the materials consumed are apportioned correctly to the co-product(s) RAF, in addition taking into account any rounding and the decimal precision that's set against the units. I haven't followed up with MS directly on this as yet as suspect its just a std feature.

    Hi JayKay/EllieHill,

We've tried to tick the "end-mark picking list" but it didn't seem to work on our side. What we did was change the flushing principle of planning item at the formula line from "finish" to "start". This appears to work. Picking list is posted once batch order was started. Co-products were added in the inventory and "consumed" item was deducted.

Set-up was the same for all, except for the flushing principle.

    Guy,

I believe I'm running into the same issue here. We run R3 CU12. We are using both discrete (BOM) and process mfg (formula and planning item). I'm testing out backflushing for planning item with two co-products.

I'm isolating the test to use component to be backflushed and the variable here is comparison between formula production type shop order and planning item production type shop order. The RaF execution parameters are set the same for both. I notice that when RaF is successfully executed, the Formula shop order will post a second picking list journal with X consumption of the backflushed component, the Planning item shop order will post a second picking list journal with 0 consumption of the backflushed component.

Could you verify that the hotfixes you list above resolved this bug? A bit concerned because if we are running CU12, these bugs should have been fixed...

    Hope to hear from you,

    Andy
