Adding a Tool to a Production Order

I'm trying to add a set of tools to a production order. I have a tool list in AX but I don't know how to attach them to the production order. Should I insert them as a resource? Please help.

    Hi,

Are those tools consumed in the production process or are they used for producing finished items?

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Blake,

It depends on what needs to be planned or posted as cost. Can you elaborate? If it is e.g. a hammer which has infinite capacity and you don't need to post cost related to the usage of this hammer, there is no need to include it in the production route.

If it is an expensive machine and/or it has finite capacity, then you have to add it as resource and include it on a route.

No they are not consumed. For example, I would include a drill bit to be used on a large router or an attachment for a lathe, horizontal mill, etc. It's for plastic fabrication of parts.

It is parts or attachments for a horizontal mill, vertical mill, lathe, router, etc. that change depending on the plastic part that needs to be fabricated. Each production order has its own route, so would I just need to add the tools as a resource?

You need this to ensure that you do not plan two milling oprations when you only have one tool right? You can use this as a parallel resource to your operation. Use the mill as a primary and a tool as a secondary operation (same OprNum e.g. 10). You could even put in a person as a primary and use the two other resources as secondary.

If you are looking into a more real and granular resource planning,

I have written about this on my blog.

So if I were to have four different tools to be attached to one mill, I could set the mill as the primary resource and the attachments as secondary resources? How would AX know that a tool is being used in operation and can't be used for another project?

A resource will then have a resource booking, and if you plan with limited capacity it will try to handle this.

I am not sure I how many paralell operations you can have...
