Hello, we are having problems deploying Guides. We have followed the steps laid out in the documentation, however one point appears to be different in our environment than in the documentation. In step 8 of Assign user roles it says to make sure the "Basic User" check box is selected. This check box is missing from the Manage User Roles list of options that we see. The other options for Dynamics 365 Guides Author and Dynamics 365 Guides Operator are present and assigned appropriately. We also see the Guides Author Restricted, and Guides Operator Restricted, these are currently not assigned. Our HoloLens application is able to log into our instance just fine, but all PC Guides Apps return an error message that says to contact IT or read the documentation. Our Guides Desktop Version is 504.2102.24001.0Our users are licensed, our Environment was recently installed and updated. So it appears that the issue is likely the need to add users as "Basic Users". How do we get this option to be visible in our Manage User Roles for the Guides environment?
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/mixed-reality/guides/assign-role
The issue appears to have been resolved and was likely due to a firewall configuration.
However, I am still curious about the above point and wondering why the Basic User Role appears unavailable.
Hi Andrew, I'll bring this to our support team and follow back with you.
Thank you David.
The solution here was twofold, one of which was to adjust our firewall.
The other was to assign our users "System Admin" role. Obviously this is not ideal to need to assign every user (including those who will only be operators) a System Admin role on our Guides Environment. So that is why we really want to know why Basic User is missing from our options. We do not want everyone who is using Guides to be System Admins.
Yes, that is not ideal. Can you check whether the person doing the assignment is a system admin? If not, what roles/permissions do they have?
Yes, the person assigning the roles for the environment, is the same as the person who created in the environment and they are a Global Admin.
We have created an additional Guides Dynamics 365 Environment from scratch, following the documentation as before and this new environment still does not have the option to assign a "Basic User" type. Our other Dynamics 365 environments do have this assignment available. This issue appears to be solely related to our Guides Deployments.
Do you see something like "common data service user"? This is the old name for Basic User and it is possible the name change has not propagated to your tenant.
Yes we see "Common Data Service User" and have applied it. Provisionally, this seems to allow us the desired functionality and we have been able to remove the "System Administrator" role after applying the "Common Data Service User" role. Thank you. I will check back in a day or so to confirm this as the answer if it proves to completely solve our problem.
Andrew - thank you for posting. We updated our documentation so others won't hit the same hiccup. Let me know if you experience any other issues.
