Barcode for Fixed Assets

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi!

My company is looking into having fixed assets tagged with barcodes, wondering if it is possible and is it possible to have handphone acting as a scanner? Noiticed warehouse management system has this function.

Wondering how it will show in the handphone it self. Is it a separate handphone application?

Thank you,

    Hi Nov,

For scanning the barcode you need either a scanner or an App, such as a PowerApp.

PowerApps has an build in barcode reader function.

The question is what you plan to do with the scanned bar codes.

If you would use D365Fo you could use a Flow and update - for example - your fixed asset master data or create a counting report.

With AX2012 things get more complex and probably also expensive.

I would thus recommend that you have a chat with your system admins and/or developers on how to design the process after the barcodes are scanned.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Amith,

The purpose is to scan the barcode into the system to identify and count, not sure if AX 2012 allows it to happen.

    Thank you,

    Hi Andre,

Thank you, not sure if there is an option to scan barcodes (to input the fixed asset tag number) into the AX system for further actions.

    Thank you,

    Hi Dr. Ludwig Reinhard,

Thanks for your reply, does it mean that the only thing AX can do with Barcodes for fixed assets module is to print out the fixed assets barcode?

    Thank you,

For AX2012 Barcode Tips just refer following article

    https://kurthatlevik.com/2011/12/07/hidden-barcode-secrets-in-dynamics-ax-2012/

There is Class called Barcode class , So i think with some effort you will able to achieve this .
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/dynamics/ax-2012/application-classes/gg737189(v=ax.60)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

but what is your purpose of scanning ? to count ? or Just to Identify ?

    Regards,

    Amith Prasanna

    Hi Nov,

In addition to the reply from Ludwig: Your question related to the handphone was not answered. Smartphones are able to scan barcodes using the camera control. Note that there is no Dynamics related app to scan the barcode and do some service, helpdesk registrations or other actions. What exact procedures do you want to fulfill with the phone?

    Hi Nov,

In D365FO everything can be done out of the box.

However, as you are in AX2012 things are a bit more difficult.

What you have in the standard application is a fixed asset bar code report.

Fixed Assets/Reports/Base Data / Fixed Asset bar codes.

This prints a report and you have to make sure that you have a proper barcode printer connected as the output destination for printing the labels.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig
