Many to Many Related filtering

Good Morning,

I'm looking to be pointed in the right direction for this one.  We are working on the case entity trying to create a filed that would eventually drive a BPF.  Using a traditional Related filtering it became to complex because of the Parent child relationship.  It required having hundreds of of different child versions which created too much confusion for how they were named.   I'm hoping there is a way filter these down in a way that won't be confusing for the user. Can anyone point me in a direction?   I've heard that Canvas Apps might be able to do this  however I'm virtually brand new to canvas apps and have no idea where to start. Hopefully the picture below  will help clear up any confusion in my words.
