RE: Binary Updates vs X++ Updates

    Hi Venkatdax0,

You asked the question two years ago and got replies. In between a lot happened. We now have continuous updates for the current versions which includes both platform and application updates. It is in a single update now.

RE: Binary Updates vs X++ Updates

    HI Venkat,

In addition to inputs from other people , in simple terms X++ updates are having updates related to application code, metadata  and business process. For example Microsoft may fix an issue when posting a sales order invoice or introduces some new functionality in production modules or add some new fields for some country specific localization. Such updates will impact the business process and code related to it, when installing such updates a code merge may be required.

Binary updates are mostly related to things which does not directly impact business process (in some situations they may) but generally they are related to things like batch threading improvement , AOS connections , DB sync performance improvements  , System crashes fixes when applying updates , SSRS framework improvements, improvements in data caching etc,

    Hope that clarifies your doubts.

RE: Binary Updates vs X++ Updates

    Hi Venkatdax0,

    As per documentation

    • AOT deployable package â€“ A deployable package that is generated from application metadata and source code. This deployable package is created in a development or build environment.
    • Binary update package â€“ A deployable package that contains dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) and other binaries and metadata that the platform and application depend on. This is a package released by Microsoft.
    • Combined Retail deployable package â€“ A combination of various Retail packages that are generated after the Retail code is combined.
    • Merged package â€“ A package that is created by combining one package of each type. For example, one binary update package, one AOT package, and one Retail package can be combined. The packages are merged in the Asset library for the project in LCS.

You can find detail here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/deployment/apply-deployable-package-system#key-concepts
