2022 Year End Update

Posted on by 5

We are in the process of upgrading our Dynamics GP 2018.4 environment to Dynamics GP 2018.5. Ideally, we would also like to migrate to a new SQL 2019 server instance, in addition to the year end upgrade. Our existing SQL 2019 server instance resides on a Linux server, and we would then install the Dynamics GP client and third party software on a workstation with a ODBC connection to the SQL 2019 server instance.

Everything appears to work as it should - restoring the Dynamics and company databases to the new SQL server, establishing the ODBC connection between the workstation and the SQL server. However, when we go to run the Dynamics GP 2018.5 client install, we get the following Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities error - ERROR [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]CREATE ASSEMBLY failed because it could not open the physical file '/System.DirectoryServices.dll: 2(The system cannot find the file specified.). (This happens with the install is on the Load Stored Procedures (DeployClrAssemblies).

I am having a hard time finding any requirements for installation when using SQL Server 2019. It appears you can no longer use a ODBC connection and need to use the OLE DB instead, when dealing with SQL 2019, but I am not seeing how you might complete the installation differently. I also do not see if we need to do anything differently since our SQL Server 2019 instance is being hosted on a Linux server.

If anyone has any experience with the scenario described above and how I can get past this error, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Kathy, I think you are going to run into a brick wall here. Since SQL on Linux isn't specifically on the system requirements page, it's more than likely not going to be supported.

If you can set up your Linux server as a virtual machine host, then you can spin up a Windows Server VM with SQL Server and everything would be fine, as Richard said.

Linux is not on the GP requirements page. The server can be an image inside Linux but the server still needs to be a windows server.

Thank you Richard, I will check into these links provided. I did see some references like this as well.

I guess I am wondering if from your perspective, is there any reason we cannot have our Dynamics GP 2018.5 clients pointing to a SQL server 2019 instance hosted on a Linux server. That is my real question.

    Thank you,

    Kathy

I am not sure where you are seeing this information about ODBC vs OLE DB but nothing has changed with GP in this regards.
