How to create a segment for new subscribers?

Hi

I'm trying to create a customer journey to send a 'welcome email' to our new subscribers - however i don't want existing subscribers to also receive this email so can't simply select the subscription list when creating the customer journey.

I think this would be a fairly common and straightforward process but i'm running into difficulties.

I've started creating a dynamic segment to help create this list but there doesn't seem to be any attributes specifically for newly subscribed users but the only way i seem to be able to isolate new subscribers is via 'contact created on is on/after XX'. This means that if a contact was already in the system (having subscribed to an alternate newsletter, attended an event etc) they wouldn't get this email which is not what we want. We want all first time subscribers to this subscription list to receive this welcome email.

How can I create a segment to isolate these users so I can add them to a customer journey?

    Hi Dan,

You can create the segment with a behavior block instead of the query block and select the “Marketing list subscribed” interaction as the condition. (something like the following screenshot)

It allows filter out contacts according to the subscribing interaction. i.e. the contact will only be filtered at the time of the subscription action and will not be affected subsequently.

If this helped you, I'd appreciate it if you'd mark this as a Verified Answer, which may in turn help others as well.

    Hi Nya

    Thanks

I have tried creating this 'marketing list subscribed' segment but they always end up empty.

When you 'enter text' in the field as in your example this is a free text field. And to me it seems that this means the segment doesn't link to the list.

In my example at the top, when you enter a marketing list it opens a lookup functionality i think it's called - where you can search for the list you're looking for. I'm not sure why these marketing list fields are so different between the behaviour and query blocks.

Otherwise can you provide any thoughts on why the segments would still have 0 contacts despite being live and having new subscribers signing up to the newsletter? The registration form isn't setup in DM365 - does that make a difference? We're not specifically looking at when a user submits a form, simply when they join a marketing list. SO therefore i presume the fact the data comes via an API feed doesn't impact the 'marketing list subscribed' functionality?

    Hi Dan,

In my example, the text field should be filled in with the id of the subscription list, which can be found in the URL of the list.

After going live the segment, the contacts can be filtered out.

    Hi Nya

Perhaps i need clarification on what you mean by contacts can be filtered out.

I added the ID of the subscription list as directed however the segment then somehow became populated with over 300 subscribers over the weekend, when in reality only 15 users subscribed to this particular newsletter. So something's still amiss. Can we attribute a subscription date from a particular starting point when using this method? I can only see timestamp as an option and that doesn't seem enough to filter the subscribers.

    Thanks

Could you elaborate more on why the timestamp field isn't enough? Is checking the timestamp to Is After a specific date not enough to filter out the earlier subscribers?

    Thanks

    Hi Saurabh

No, because the timestamp field doesn't work. In all of the tests i've created I either get no users in the segment using a timesteamp, or 5% of what should otherwise meet the criteria.

One campaign i've set this up with has had maybe 30-40 recent subscribers, yet the corresponding segment with the timestamp on/after a date from last week has only 4 contacts, so it's not even remotely accurate.

It's very frustrating but like most parts of DM365 it just doesn't seem to work. Perhaps a different field is required

Hi Eddie, if this is still a persisting issue, we are happy to get on a call and discuss further this scenario.
