etag is mandatory while update updating the item through API call

Dear All,

We have been trying update an item through API, however We have to pass latest etag in API header (if-match) to update the Item.

As you know, first, I have to make a Get call for an item to get the latest etag in order update an Item.

is it mandatory to pass latest etag on every update of item?

or 

is there any option to avoid it while updating the Items through API?
