Good Morning to All,
I have been recently tasked to review my company's CoA and the ability extract data based on the monthly trial balance. After further review of the CoA, I realized that the manner in which the CoA was designed does not allow a "deep" dive into our financial records. The original CoA was never designed for growth and instead of adding accounts the previous individual in charge continued to put things in buckets to make the high level financials correct.
Doing so I am attempting to research if it is a possible:
1. To move from a 5 segment string to a 6 segment string in the CoA, if I have to create a new company in Great Plains it leads to more questions
2. Is there a way to export the Vendor Data from Company into a new Company? I do not mind creating a brand new company within GP but our Vendor information is quite extensive and would be extremely time consuming. Although our CoA would be completely different, we would still have the same vendors.
Any possible information or lessons learned on an effort like this would be greatly appreciated
Best regards,
Denis C.

I have the same question (0)Hi Denis
I will give you some information, but maybe this is something that you should discuss with your Microsoft partner who should know your existing setup and will be able to make recommendations.
First to change from a 5 string segment to a 6 string segment is going to depend on how things were setup originally.
Go to Microsoft Dynamics GP > Tools > setup > company > account format
In the upper section it will tell you what the system was setup for. In the Maximum segments box, how many segments are listed?
Also you don't say what the length of each segment is so in the Maximum Account length field, what is the value?
What is the length of each segment of your current 5 segment GL structure?
Do not despair if what you want to do looks like it can't be done. There is a company that has a 3rd party product that can change the account structure and it works very well.
Lets talk first about the GL and then move onto the vendors
