DotNet compatibility with AX

So I've always created my projects in .net 4.6.1 and because I didn't used it too much I didn't bothered but now...

I would like to know how AX or more X++ is limited by .Net? I know X++ doesn't support generic types but I would like to see a bigger picture.

Like right now I try to create a c# library for encryption using AES and RSA key yet it looks like .Net 5.0 is what im looking for this job (using of .pem files).

The compiler wasn't happy even when I had a mismatch of 4.6 and 4.6.1 >Net projects in my solution so how would It go Using higher .Net in my Library than my x++ project or using both 5.0 .net?

I have the same question (0)

    Hi partner,

What do you mean by how X++ is limited by .Net? Do you have any actual requirement?

And please check the MS document:

My bad I should say X++ limits some functions from .Net since it don't support some fearures like C# do.

As I work on VS2017 .Net 5 or higher is not in mi sight unless I get a new licence.

About my requirement as I said earlier I'm trying to write a encryption / decryption library that does work with AES key encrypted with RSA public key that is storem in a .pam file. As for the AES IV encryption im good for now I'm struggling with getting the RSA key from .pam file and using it to encrypt the AES key.

Are you saying that you don't know how to do it at all (even in C#), or that you have a problem specific to X++?

If it's the former, BouncyCastle may be a solution (see Reading PEM RSA Public Key Only using Bouncy Castle, for example). F&O already uses BouncyCastle, therefore the assembly is available there.

By the way, if you ever need code running on a different version of .NET than F&O, you can use a separate application for that. Because F&O runs in Azure, an Azure Function would be a logical choice.

Yes, I have issues doing it even in C# using .Net 4.x.

I didn't know F&O uses the BouncyCastle, just tried to use .net and since 4.x seems to not support .pem files I looked on 5.0 that does it.

I suppose AX7 runs on .net 4.x since it was developed before 5 came out yet as I said earlier I'm interested in the implications of using higher .net version in F&O. ABout Azure Function it's something I need to look on in the future.

You can't use .NET 5 library in an application that isn't running on .NET Framework 5, because there wouldn't be the .NET 5 features that the library needs.

See the last paragraph of my previous reply for a workaround.

Well that's quite sad. I hoped I could use a C# library with higher .net version. So In the future I will need to make separate aps for it or use just 4.x or Azure Functions.

    Anyway thanks for response.
