Issues While Upgrading to GP 10 SP 5 from SP 4

While attempting to upgrade to GP 10.00.1779 (SP 5) from 10.00.1424 (SP 4), using the help from KB 2599501 and the 10.0SP5_install_guide, I am running into an issue when attempting to Launch GP after having run the Hotfix exe file and upgrading the companies. When I open GP I receive the error: "A product on the computer is on a different version than the database version".

I am attempting to open GP on the server where I originally installed the hotfix, not on another client workstation, so I am not sure what step I am missing. I have looked at KB 915897 for assistance, and I found the GP_LoginErrors.log file, but I am not sure what to do with that. Any thoughts on next steps?

    Hi Nathan,

You are getting that error message because Dynamics GP application didn't match the version you have on the DB server.

In my understanding, this is happening on the server were you originally installed the hotfix.

When you launch GP on the server where you originally installed the hotfix, were you  able to run GP Utilities to "update the tables"?

I'm just trying to understand at what point the issue occurs.

You are correct in that this is on the server where I originally installed the hotfix.

I am able to launch GP Utilities and run the update on the tables. The issue occurs at the end of the Utilities process when it gives you the option to open up the GP application. At first it opens and allows you to enter the sa user name and password, but when attempting to enter any of the companies, I receive the error mentioned above.

This also occurs if I attempt to open GP from the start menu rather than through the button at the end of the GP Utilities process.

Can you tell me what you get in GP_LoginErrors.log file?

Kind of hard to explain, but it sounds like the *.cnk were not updated to the dynamics.dic file.   Did you get a message to say "yes' to install new files when launching GP (not utiilities).    You can look for the *.cnk files on the machine program files\common files\Microsoft GP (the folders underl that will be vague).   You can right click on the *.cnk files and select dictionary to get the version number and see if they match with the database version.   I have seen where sometime the new *.cnk files are not extracted from the install media either.

    Nathan,

Please try to reinstall your service pack KB2636462 (10.0.1779) on this machine and let me know how it goes.

Douglas - we were thinking there may have been some issue with the *.cnk files, but were not sure where those were dropped, so thank you for providing that folder path. I do not believe GP (not utilties) asked to upgrade when I first opened it after running the hotfix and the utilties upgrades.

Cecile - I will attempt running the service pack again and see if I get different results.

One other item that may come into play...The *.dic files that GP references are on another server location, not on the local drive where GP is installed (lets call that \\Dev01\dictionary). It appears that upgraded *.dic files appeared on the C: drive of the server GP is installed on. Would there be any issue with copying (what I believe to be) the updated *.dic files over the \\Dev01\dictionary drive? Obviously I would want to make a backup of that folder prior to copying anything to it.

    Nathan,

There is no problem in copying the .dic files - yes backup prior copying it.

We never recommend to copy files or code from another machine anymore guys. We write more to the registry along with what modules are installed so if you don't have the exact same modules installed on every machine you are going to run into issue applying SP/hotfixes in the future.
