ISV License certificate is expiring

Hi,

What will happen when the certificate used to create an ISV license expires?

And is there an official statement from Microsoft that I can show to my CTO, which is quite worried that everything will stop working, or that we won’t be able to change license (increased user count) without having to also replace the model.

A expiration date has not been applied to the license itself, and the certificate does not have the 1.3.6.1.4.1.311.10.3.13 attribute.

I think the question is pretty identical to the following, however, I have not been able to find the answer:
https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/dynamics-365-unified-operations-public/issues/1490

I tried to test it using a self-signed certificate, like mentioned here:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/dev-tools/isv-licensing

My tests seemed to conclude that:

  1. Instances where the licenses are already loaded are not impacted when the certificate expires..
  2. Still able to load licenses which was created with a now-expired certificate, as long as the CA is valid.
  3. Still able to generate new licenses and install them after the certificate has expired by setting the system date back.

However, these tests were not concluded in production, and did use self-signed certificates.

Thanks,
DFA

I would recommend to update the cert before it expires. But, as you have also noticed, the already installed licenses don't seem to stop working even if the cert expires.

Is your CTO willing to take any chances regarding this? I would not be.

The issue is that we are on the previous major version of the package and are not yet finished with implementation/testing of the next major version which comes with the new certificate.

One solution could be to ask the ISV to create a package for the previous major version with the new certificate.

However, if that is required, then that is quite a big risk for the use of ISV packages which relies on Microsoft’s standard license.

We need to be sure that every ISV keeps being in business and creating packages at least every ~2 years which we are able to implement, even when having acquired an unlimited license for a major version and that version working flawless.

    Hi DFA,

Are you an ISV or are you using some ISV products? If you are using the ISV products, then it will run until you have to renew the license or deploy new packages.

The ISV should provide you a new deployable package including a new license file in time. We had the same situation last year at To-Increase and prepared in time and had an overlap of 3 months.

RE: ISV License certificate is expiring

    Hi André,

Ok, so in an absolute worst-case scenario where an ISV goes out of business, then we can keep using their product even if their certificate expires, as long as the original license matches the system, and there are no breaking changes with the existing package?

In that specific case, we would of course be looking for an alternative product as soon as possible, but changing product or developing something from scratch would take longer than to install and test a new package from an existing ISV.

So being able to use the existing product past the expiration date of its certificate and gain some extra time could be quite helpful.

Not that I would ever hope that it happened.

    Thanks,

    DFA

If the ISV would go out of business you would have also other problems than the license. Eventually their last package would not be compatible with latest MS updates, preventing you from installing new MS updates and causing you to be out of MS support with your system.

I think it's good to try to have some kind of agreement with the ISV to prepare for this scenario. If they would go out of business, perhaps they could share their source code (models) with you so that you could keep maintaining the codebase and even remove the ISV licensing part. Without the source code, you are in big trouble if the ISV would go out of business.
