I read that conditional formatting is not available using Word custom reports - is this likely to change or should an RDL report be used for conditional formatting

No news to suggest it will. RDL is the way to go for this.

This is a limitation of Word layouts vs RDLC layouts.

Hi,

Power BI reporting also supports Conditional formatting in an easy way. This can also be an option to use.
