inventory unit <-> sales unit

Hi,

We purchase cable roles, one cable role = 200meter

So, purchase unit = role 200m

In the warehouses we also transport complete roles and we want to see how many roles (NOT how many meters) we have in inventory, so inventory unit = role 200m (and not 'meter' because if we have 5 roles in inventory, we would see not 5 'roles 200m' but 1000 'meter' -> not user friendly!)

We sell to our customers per meter, so sales unit = meter.

But the problem is, when we sell for example 5meter or 120meter or ..., the inventory unit is also minus 1 but we still have almost a full role...for example: 5 roles in inventory, we sell 6 meter -> result is 4 roles in inventory...

Have someone a solution for this?

Thanks!

Frederik

in AX2012 you have in organisation administration panel > Setup > Units > Unit conversion and check your unit conversion all units conversion should be there in 2 ways  purchase to inventory and inventory to purchase (or inventory to sale in your case)  and click on the calculator for units to validate the calculation

    ex. from 200M to meter

         from meter to 200M

         from 5meter to meter

         from meter to 5meter

in AX2009 it is in basic module

you have a setup in the item too in Item form > setup button > Unit conversion but i prefer to put the information for global setup not individual

i hope it can help you

yes, i set up the unit conversions! I'll explain with a complete example:

    Item: role cable of 200meter

    purchase unit: 'role 200m'

    inventory unit: 'role 200m'

    sales unit: 'meter'

unit conversions: 1 'meter' = 1 / 200 'role 200m' and 1 'role 200m' = 200 'meter' and rounding: UP (not 'down' or 'to nearest' because if you sell a quantity < 100m, the inventory quantity you'll sell is zero...so system throws an error 'not possible to pick a quantity of zero...)

    I purchase 5 'role 200m' -> Inventory: 5 'role 200m'

I sell 6 meter -> Inventory: 4 'role 200m' however almost 5 complete roles are available in the warehouse...So one role is out of the inventory while 194m is still in it...

    A solution could be:

    purchase unit: 'role 200m'

    inventory unit: 'meter'

    sales unit: 'meter'

But when i purchase 5 'role 200m' -> Inventory: 1000 'meter' -> not user friendly...

    Hello Frederik

Your right for the solution and it's the way AX work.

The inventory is the way you use it on the floor not buy it.

i understand your buyer said it's not user friendly but

the conversion should do it for you and you see the way the production use it.

Today you can buy in 200 meters with vendor A for a price XX.XX  and

tomorow with and other supplier you can buy

the same product  250 meters for a price of YY.YY .

Your inventory should be good when you receive it. The system will convert it for you.

if you use production order with BOM

your BOM components should set too corectly with use in meter and your production will be backflush correctly in meter too

The purchase unit of measure will go with the price you buy  too dont forget it.

it why you have purchase unit. Inventoy unit,  Bom unit and Sale unit

and all price is link with the good unit.

If you use MRP the planner purchase order will have the good quantity to buy with 'role 200m'

Sorry i not have a better response

    have a nice day
