If a member for whatever reason, was not added the an automation through the trigger point. Is there a way to manually add them into an automation?

By automation do you mean Customer Journey? If yes, as long as the Journey has not expired, you can add features to the member to make it trigger the Journey.
For example, you created a segment which filter out the contacts whose names start with A and started a customer journey with the segment as the audience of it.
There is a new contact satisfy this condition. The contact will be added into the segment automatically.
So you can change the member’s fields or interactions manually, which allows to add it into the Customer Journey.
