WHS Put-away Location Directives (creativity needed!)

Hello Forum Gurus!

I have a put-away scenario I have been trying to address using location directives, but can't seem to get it all sorted out.  Basically, I have a two-step put-away process.

  • Worker #1 Picks from RECV location and Stages the item in the Bulk Warehouse
  • Worker #2 Picks from the Stage location and Puts it in the rack.

The reason I need the two steps is because worker #1 uses a simple pallet jack to stage the item at the end of an aisle; worker #2 uses a wire-guided fork-lift to put the item away.  The goal is to keep worker #2 "in the aisle", and not have him/her cruising around the warehouse.

Here is where it gets tricky:

I have 20 "bulk" aisles in this warehouse.  Each aisle has 4 staging locations at the end of it.  My location directives need to establish TWO things:

  • Is there an empty location in the aisle's racks that can hold the item?
  • Is one of the 4 staging locations at the end of the aisle open?
  • BOTH of these conditions need to be true.

My WORK should look something like this:

  1. PICK from RECV
  2. PUT to STAGE-AISLE-12
  3. ***STOP***
  4. PICK from STAGE-AISLE-12
  5. PUT to 12-1-2-3  (my final put location)

In the example above, the system would have evaluated aisles 1 to 12, finally finding an empty location in aisle 12 (12-1-2-3).  However, the PUT in step #2 needs to be associated to this final location, and direct this initial put to STAGE-AISLE-12.

Any clever ideas?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Hanno,

I'm working slowly on a blog post for this type of P&D operation. I believe the easiest way is to create a Zone ID per staging location and map your aisle locations to the staging locations by zone. You will need one work template per zone that is queried on the zone, and by directive code on the first put line. So one directive code per staging location as well. Two location directives for each work template, one for final putaway location and one for the staging location. The location directive actions for the final putaway location should be directed by zone and location profile ID (keep separate location profiles for staging and aisle) and the location directive actions for the staging locations should query directly on the staging location and be setup with the corresponding directive code.

    Hello Markus!

Thanks for your reply.  I didn't think to "drive" the initial put from the Work-template (instead of the LD).  Your suggestion worked perfectly.

We have now published a blog post with suggestions on how to set this up: blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../inbound-pick-and-drop-inbound-staging-in-microsoft-dynamics-365-for-operations
