POS database size is increasing day by day

Hello,

I am having a peculiar problem for my POS database. I am using Dynamics AX 2012 and its retail module for my POSs. I have noticed one machine's drive free space is decreasing day by day. Then I have checked what is the real cause and came to know that the log file is eating up all these spaces. And log file is still growing. Now the free space has reached 100MB for my POS and none of the pushing jobs are working. I have even tried to shrink both data base file and log file but few MBs are releasing out as free space. My next step was to reinstall the application in another POS and putting the backup from old machine. But the backup itself comes 199GB and I am not able to restore this backup in new machine which is saying that not enough free space to restore in new POS.

Can anybody shed some light on this issue?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,

Dhanoop Ramdas Warrier

In case you are not taking the backups, check the SQL database settings. If the recovery model is set to simple, it will not create the logs. To get rid of the logs, you need to perform a database backup first.

    Hi Andre,

I am not taking regular backup for the POSs. I am taking backup for the server data only.

I read somewhere that deleting log file may cause some inconsistencies. Is there any safe method to delete the logs. So that I can use the same machine. Now I am forced to configure a new machine and do redeployment for the invoice sequences in which the old data cannot be accesibile since I cannot put the old backup.

What is your recovery model and backup plan for this DB?

Check which top 10 tables size from this DB and share result.

    Hi Dhanoop,

If the log file is growing, it could mean that the backup procedure is incorrect or not running. Please check if the backup is configured correctly and is actually completing successfully.
