Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Archived)

Anyone have experience using NAV's built in SKU creation and assignment?

My consultants have told me that NAV is able to generate unique SKUs for all of our items (retail). I was wondering if:

- This causes a large increase in the size of our database

- This slows down any aspect of our database

- There are any other adverse affects on our current NAV 2009 RTC configuration

    Hi,

The volume of data will anyway increase the size of the database.  The creation of SKU wouldn't slow down the performance.  In a scenario, where the SKU is required, you don't have another choice.  I hope that MS well designed the structure of the database to cater to the smooth functioning of the system.  By the way, what would be the expected growth of your database annually?

    Best Regards,

    MMV

Lot of companies use unique SKUs, take it easy :-)

As a retailer, you should consider the use of "item variants" as well (for colours, etc.).

    Good luck!!

    Hi Edward,

SKU's are working very good and not slowing down performance.

As Miguel sais, you can make SKU's per location code but also combined with variant codes, allowing you to do things with colours, sizes, ..

One big advantage is that planning parameters can be configured per SKU. Things like min stocks, replenishment system, .. . But be aware that this means an increase of the work to maintain al of these parameters.

If well configured however, the system can propose you production orders in your production location, and transfer orders to transfer goods from the production location to other locations.

The same goes for purchased goods where you can centralize your purchases and let the system propose transfers to the other locations.

    kr,

    Francis

I have found out that we do not have to create them for every single item in the database. They only need to be created for items which will be used in min/max calculations. We really aren't concerned about any of the problems I outlined anymore.
