Product Builder Setup

In AX2009 SP1, I am trying to set up Product Builder to generate new configurations, but not new items, for each sales line.

  • I have set modeling enabled in the item that is associated with the product model I have setup.
  • I have set the Dimension Group on the item to a group that has the configuration dimension active.
  • In the Generate Items and Configurations form, I have enabled Generate Configurations, but NOT Generate Items.
  • Configurations are always reused.

My questions...

  1. When I attempt to add a sales line, the system trys to validate the configuration dimension before the product builder starts.  I can get around this by setting a default configuration. Is it necessary to have a default configuration set for the item?
  2. When I finish the configuration of a sales line, the ItemID is replaced by the Product Model number.  This throws an error, because the product model is not a valid item.  I want the Item number to remain the same, and the configurationID to be updated.  Does anyone know how to set this up?

Thanks!

LJ

    Hi Lj

Yes it is enough just to create one called default or config under item details/setup/configurations. This will never be used, because the product model replaces the config ID.

You should not have configurable mark when it is a product model.

Thanks Brian for the info.  I do have most of this seemingly correct.  It does sound like you are saying that a default configuration is required.  Should the configurable check box be checked?  I seem to get errors when it is. I am not really sure how to manually create a configuration, as I have only ever built them with product builder.  Is it enough to just make an entry in Item Details, Setup, Configurations and give it a name?

I have cured the problem relating to product builder replacing the item on the sales line rather than the configuration.  I deleted all of the configurations and started over and that resolved the issue.  I think it stemmed from an early setup error.

    Thanks,

    Hi LJ

The setup is normally quite simple to perform the actions you would like.

When creating your Item, then ensure that the dimension group has Configuration actvie. (looks like you did that)

On the product model - setup - generate items and dimensions
Mark the first checkbox Generate  configuration
On the configuration variables tab page, mark the variables that you want to have as the config ID
in the format specify the format for the configuration ex. %1-%2
If you want the dimensions to be copied to the BOM header when making it, then mark the copy config.

On the item create a default configuration, and make it as std configuration.

This should be the setup. I have just tried it in Ax demo data, here you can see the example on item 1119.
