Any suggestions?  So far the best I've found is this www.pcmag.com/.../0,2817,2417564,00.asp and that's just pitiful.

    Hi Tim,

If you are thinking about running the Dynamics AX mobile/tablet apps like "Expense", "Business Analyzer", then I think you can choose WinRT version of windows tablet as well. (The link you got there only show Windows 8.1 tablets).

On the other hand, what are you looking for and why the list you got there is pitiful to you?

    Kind Regards,

    Dominic Lee

    Hi Dominic,

What I was hoping to find here in the forums was a some commentary, at least anecdotal, from the community with things like "we've used the Hackensack Bowevil 5000 on our forklifts and they hold up really well." or anything but, I haven't found one peep.

I've got a client that is asking what tablet they should use for their industrial workcenters vs. their distribution environment and the best we had to offer was, well, what do you have now?

I haven't seen anything relevant to my queries searching here or in the wild.

    Hi Tim,

I see. Unfortunately, I don't have any reference to provide.

Besides waiting for others to fill in here, you might also consider contact Microsoft directly and ask for reference from them.

We recently had to work through this problem.  While are situation may be somewhat different than yours, maybe some of what we learned will be helpful.

We needed a solution for our warehouse workers when they are walking around or on a forklift.  With our legacy warehouse management system we had used ruggedized windows mobile handhelds.  We replaced this system with Dynamics AX and needed something for the warehouse workers to use.

We first tried a couple different Windows tablets.  We quickly came to the conclusion that we needed something different than the standard Dynamics AX windows client.  I have nothing against the Dynamics AX client, however it is a desktop application intended to be used on a desktop with a large monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse.  It is not designed to be used on a small touch screen device, and in my opinion trying to use it that way will make for a very frustrating experience.

There are a number of companies that make frontend applications for Dynamics AX that are designed specifically for warehousing.  These applications are designed to work very nicely on a mobile devices.  Or if you have developers available it is not terribly difficult to use the Dynamics AX web services and create your own basic front end.  Whatever you do, I would strongly advice that it be web based.  Having a web application gives you a lot of freedom on what device you use.

We did a lot of experimenting with devices.  We tried some of the ruggedized windows mobile handhelds.  They worked, however it is difficult to find a good modern web browser for these devices, and they are fairly expensive.  We also looked at iPhones and iPads.  We felt the iPhone screen was too small, and we could not find a way to connect a bar code scanner to the iPad that we were happy with.  We also tried the Microsoft Surface but felt it was too big.

Ultimately we ended up settling on the Nexus 7 tablet.  We picked the Nexus 7 for the following reasons:

    • It seemed to be a nice size for mobile use in the warehouse.

    • The battery is able to last an entire shift.

    • They are inexpensive.

    • While they are not a rugged device, if we put them in a rugged case they end up being pretty rugged.  And with the price difference between this and a ‘ruggedized’ device we can easily afford to have them break more frequently.

    • We were able to find a nice mount for the forklift.

    • Using USB OTG we were able to plug our existing bar code scanners into the Nexus 7.

    Hi Eric,

Thank for sharing.  I have a few questions as I am also trying to develop Win8 App or modern App for Dynamics AX. I have finished one of my WinRT app for dynamics NAV using C#/XAML and it works very well for online and offline mode. As for Ax, I am still searching for info.

With reference to your statement "Whatever you do, I would strongly advice that it be web based"

    1. Do you mean develop mobile/Tablet app using  Html/CSS/JavaScript  for Dynamics AX? What do you think of C#/XAML for mobile phone and Surface RT/Pro as compare to Html/Css/JavaScript for AX.

    2. For your present solution, are you also using Web for your Android or using Native for Android. I am thinking to try Android approach using Native. Hope you can share your experience.

    Thanks

When I suggested web based, I meant a Html/CSS/JavaScript web page.  The reason I suggested this is that a properly designed web solution should be able to run on any device with a modern web browser (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, Windows Mobile, etc..)  It takes away the concern of whether or not there is a app available for the device that you are wanting to use.  The experience is not as nice as a native app, but it is surprising how close it can get with a well designed web page.  Of course if you need offline capabilities then a web based solution will probably not be the best solution.

For our present solution we internally developed a web application using Html/CSS/JavaScript and ASP.Net MVC.  The solution is a web page that is viewed in the Android Chrome browser.
