NavUserPassword connection

I installed Nav 2016 in a server and I created an instance that with Windows authentication works. There is not domain, so I set NavUserPassword as connection type. The instance runs, but when I try to open Nav there is an error message "the server was not found", anyway the instance still run. In the event viewer there is a warning that say:

The service could not add service principal names because the service account could not be found in Active Directory.
Account: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

I suggest using a proper domain user account instead of Network Service. It is both more secure, and results in fewer issues. Ensure that this user account is authorized to Log on as a Service from the server's Local Security Policy > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > Log on as a service.

I would recommend having this user account be used to run the NAV service, as well as the SQL service.

I also assume that you have an SSL certificate with the requisite thumbprint, etc. that you need as pre-condition for using NavUserPassword?

I hope this helps. If my response has helped answer your question, please take a moment to verify by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"

    Hi AJ.

Yes, I created a certificate and I think it's correct, because the instance it's running.

The problem is that there is not a domain in the server. Do you think that creating a domani (even if the clients will not be inside...) could solve the problem?

Thanks Maneesha, the instructions in the links are the same I used for my installation. I made more than one NavUserPassword Nav installation and I never detecrted this issue. I think that it depend from Operating System, but I'm not sure. Last week I made exactly the same things in another installation and it's working.

The warning is not the issue. I get it on a lot of servers and it is just what it says: the service principal names could not be added to the AD. But NAV still runs - also with NavUserPassword.

Have you restartet the NAV service?

Have you reconfigured both the server and the windows client?

Are you sure both hostname and port is correct? Can you ping the hostname and with the expected IP?

I Gert. I'm not connected by client. It doesn't works on the server :-(

The instance is running and with Windows connection Nav client works, but with NavUserPassword not.

    Ok.

Have you restarted the NAV service after reconfiguring it to NavUserPassword?

Have you reconfigured the NAV Client to use NavUserPassword?

Do you get anything in the windows event log besides the service principel name warning?

    Hi MMostacchi,

I realize I said domain account, but in the absence of a domain, using a local Windows account with Admin privileges will do just fine to perform the steps I've noted above.

As you noted in response to Maneesha, it could be something unique about the environment.

Have you run the BPA tool that comes on the NAV DVD? Back in NAV 2009, we'd get a lot of these SPN errors and the BPA tool would help us narrow down the source of the issue or something that we'd missed.

Hi mmostacchi. I have encountered the same problem. May I ask if you have found a solution to it?
