Dev server to work as build server v1611TP4

Hi,

are there instructions how to make a DEV server act also as a BUILD server? If I deploy only a DEV box via LCS, can I, and if so how, configure the DEV server with the needed components to work also as a build machine?

Yes, you can.  It may be easier to deploy a build box, but if you really need to repurpose the dev box, here are the steps:

    step 1:

Check if you have a folder DynamicsSdk on the box. If you do not, get it from a different build server.

    step 2:

In PowerShell (elevated), run this (provide your values for the TODOs):

.\SetupBuildAgent.ps1 -VSO_ProjectCollection "todo.visualstudio.com/DefaultCollection" -AosWebsiteName "AOSService" -VSOAccessToken "TODOToken" -AgentName "TODOYourAgentName" -Force

    step 3:

In PowerShell (elevated), run this (provide your values for the TODOs):

.\BuildEnvironmentReadiness.ps1 -VSO_ProjectCollection "todo.visualstudio.com/DefaultCollection" -ProjectName "TODOProjectName" -VSOAccessToken "TODOToken" -AosWebsiteName "AOSService" -Force

    step 4:

go to visualstudio.com and check that the agent is hooked up.

    Many thanks for this!

I didn't realize that it would be "this" simple.

    Hey Andreas,

I have been trying to execute this script and found your response here. I'm getting an error when I try and run it - any suggestions?   This is on a platform 7 D365ops downloaded VHD

    Hi Andreas,

In my downloaded VHD of PU 5, when I run the Step 2 i.e. SetupBuildAgent.ps1 command, I am getting the following error:-

Write-Message : 6:40:30 AM: Error configuring VSTS Agent service: Cannot index into a null array.

    At C:\DynamicsSDK\SetupBuildAgent.ps1:637 char:5

       + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Write-Error], WriteErrorException

       + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.WriteErrorException,Write-Message

Can you tell me what might be the problem?

There should another message (written at line 636) containing details of the actual error. Can you share it with us, please?

Also note that you can debug Powershell scripts (with breakpoints and all such stuff), if needed.

Yes, I second the suggestion to debug this in the PowerShell ISE. While doing that, verify that the VM has internet access (as it downloads the agent), check that the agent's installation succeeds, etc...
