Items valued by weight

I have a requirement to run Dynamics CRM for a silver products manufacturer. These products are valued according to their weight.

Now, of course there is an estimated average weight for each item - but the catch is that actual sales and inventory relate to the precise weight of each item (silver is a precious metal and every gram/ounce counts).

The complication is due to the fact that the product is 1 unit but it's price is driven by it weight, so actually - price unit is per gram but sale unit is one product (say-a silver goblet).

At Quotes and Orders stages of the flow - an average weight will suffice, but once the flow reaches Invoice and even before on vendor and Inventory - weight MUST be exact.

I'm banging my head for quit a while to find a solution......

Anyone with an idea??

I have the same question (0)

    Hi Avi69

    Please check the below approach:

    1. Rename the "Quantity" (Out of box) field to "Effective Weight"

    2. Add new field "Product Quantity" - This represents the number of products

    3. Add new field "Product Weight" - This field represents weight of each product.

    4. Effective weight =  (Product Quantity) * (Product Weight) - (Business rule / Plugin)

This will give you the effective weight of silver in the out of box quantity.

Your price should be per gram.

Your product line (quote / order / invoice) represents the total silver gms.

    Hi ba365guy,

    That's all nice and neat

But what about the product configuration? what will be the unit settings for such a product?

Will it be Grams (the price unit) or shall it be Goblet (the sales unit)?

It totally affects Quotes, Orders, Invoices etc.

It is suggested you define it per gram. Then only the effective weight (Quantity) field will be helpful to calculate the actual value.

OK I'll give a shot and see how it all works.

    Thanx

I was lost when i came to USA and realized that everything is different. I had no idea that you guys don't use the metric system. I was fine with distance but weight and temperature got me really confused. I had no idea how to convert anything and that is why I started using converter. It is still a little bit strange, but I convert stuff like "65 kg to lbs" every time I'm in that situation which is surprisingly very often. I convert everything now, it can even calculate percentage and do some math calculations which is really cool and everything is done very quickly.

it's a little off-topic I guess, but... Tom Sands, could you please tell me a converter for metters and cm, as one you suggested for kg?

There are many different programs and sites that convert units of measure, which simplifies the calculation of the price of the goods. You go to a pawn shop to sell your jewelry, whether it's gold or stones, they will weigh it in ounces, and you only know how much you have in grams, that's where converters help. For example, I use cm-to, in repair, because it allows me to change meters into inches, centimeters, and decimeters, which is very helpful in my work.
